This handsome and rare LP – with 1S/1S stampers – from RCA Victor (LM-1742, US pressing, plum/silver dog label, mono only – no stereo edition exists) features Yehudi Menuhin and Gerald Moore in a captivating account of Tartini’s “Devil’s Trill” Sonata.

Filling out the disc is a generous offering of violin encore pieces, all warmly recorded at EMI Studio No. 3, Abbey Road, London, in June 1953 and sounding superb here.

This is exalted playing by any measure and all those who treasure the art of the violin will find much to savor here. Gerald Moore supplies perfectly graded accompaniment.

There are erudite and eloquent liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by George Jellinek, printed in English only. The striking cover photo/design is uncredited.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD+. There is edgewear, discoloration, and aging, but that is all. There are no bends, seamsplits, or owners' markings, and the jacket remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, an a very good collector’s copy.

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Though there are a few tics (nothing repetitive) and occasioinal light surface noise, I have no hesitation in grading this as EX. Playback is superb throughout. Nonetheless, those requiring flawless or NM surfaces are kindly advised to look elsewhere – overall, this rates as an excellent collector’s copy.
