  Curtis Mayfield ist den Meisten als Komponist des Superfly Soundtracks noch ein Begriff, doch sein Solo-Debüt ist gerade in Europa aus den Ohren der Menschen verschwunden. Das Werk aus dem Jahr 1970 musikhistorisch ein direkter und notwendiger Vorgänger zu Marvin Gayes "What's Going On" und Mafield kombinierte seine Falsetto Stimme zu R&B Grooves in einem damals neuen Cross-Over-Stil und erschuf somit einen ganz neuen Musikbereich für schwarze Künstler.

Das Album selbst ist eine musikalische Achterbahnfahrt mit Sounds der Großstadt und der Gospeleinflüsse im Gesang von Curtis Mayfield der aus seiner Zeit mit den Impressions stammt. Die Songs handeln von Vorurteilen, Rassismus und Ungerechtigkeit und sind somit ein Abbild des Lebens der schwarzen Bevölkerung Amerikas am Anfgang der 70er Jahre.

Das MFSL Re-Issue erscheint als 24-Karat-Gold CD mit ReMastering von Rob LoVerde von den analogen Masterbändern. Die einzelnen Exemplare sind einzeln durchnummeriert und limitiert.

Curtis Mayfield might best be remembered for producing the Super Fly soundtrack but the incomparable soul singer/multi-instrumentalist/composer never eclipsed the genius he achieved on 1970’s groundbreaking Curtis. Released shortly after he departed the Impressions, Mayfield’s self-titled solo debut set new standards in areas of production, songwriting, and musical fusion. A gripping statement that fearlessly confronted the controversial issues consuming America and urban life, it remains an inextricable part of the R&B landscape. Seldom has an album registered with so many audiences and groups.

Almost unconsciously, with Curtis, Mayfield created the blueprint for the future of psychedelic funk, birth of blaxploitation music, and advancement of elegant soul that placed black music on the same platform as the era’s most celebrated pop and rock recordings. On top of it all, the Chicago native delivered message-driven lyrics that challenged the social, economic, and political concerns that had become inherent to the African-American experience.

Mastered from the original master tapes, and available on numbered edition 24K Gold CD from Mobile Fidelity, the eminently soulful Curtis now invigorates the senses and triggers reactions like never before. Mayfield’s smooth singing and brilliant production devices resonate with incredible immediacy and breathtaking clarity, all the while retaining the raw spirit and ambitious sophistication Mayfield intended. Whether this 1970 classic is a longtime favorite or you’ve never heard it, this is the only version to own.

The first solo album by the former leader of the Impressions, Curtis represented a musical apotheosis for Curtis Mayfield -- indeed, it was practically the "Sgt. Pepper's" album of '70s soul, helping with its content and its success to open the whole genre to much bigger, richer musical canvases than artists had previously worked with. All of Mayfield's years of experience of life, music, and people were pulled together into a rich, powerful, topical musical statement that reflected not only the most up-to-date soul sounds of its period, finely produced by Mayfield himself, and the immediacy of the times and their political and social concerns, but also embraced the most elegant R&B sounds of the past. As a producer, Mayfield embraced the most progressive soul sounds of the era, stretching them out compellingly on numbers like "Move on Up," but he also drew on orchestral sounds (especially harps), to achieve some striking musical timbres (check out "Wild and Free"), and wove all of these influences, plus the topical nature of the songs, into a neat, amazingly lean whole. There was only one hit single off of this record, "(Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Down Below We're All Going to Go," which made number three, but the album as a whole was a single entity and really had to be heard that way.
