One of the most difficult UK Motown LPs to track down and here’s a beautiful copy. This came from the collection of a record reviewer who received it directly from the company in 1964, he played it a couple of times (at most) then filed it away as he received more records the following week and so now along with most of the rest of his collection it’s made it’s way to me. I played it for the first time in over forty years yesterday and it sounds incredible, I’m seriously tempted to keep this but I have another nice copy and I’m trying to clear some storage space so here it’s is.

Musically I’m sure you’re familiar with it but if not well it’s just high quality pop/soul the sort of thing Motown did so well, there are no weak moments here and just about every track on the album has Northern Soul dance floor potential (if indeed they haven’t already been featured in Northern clubs, sorry, I’m a bit out of touch with the Northern scene).

Condition:

Sleeve: Fantastic! This has been in an unopened record box for over forty years and it just looks immaculate. It’s a typical EMI/Garrod & Lofthouse sixties sleeve made of thinish card laminated on the front only with flipbacked flaps on the rear, also on the rear is the “Patents Pending” notation which some people put such store in. The front couldn’t really be better, it’s incredibly clean with no writing or tears anywhere and when did you last see a record which was over forty years old which didn’t have any lamination creases at all? Not even the smallest crease? Well, here’s one (and there’s more coming soon!). If I had to find one fault with the front sleeve it would be that there is a slight (very very very slight!) hint of an indentation where the record sits inside the sleeve, this isn’t any ringwear I hasten to add, it’s just the suggestion at the top and bottom of the sleeve that somethng circular goes inside it, I store records and sleeves seperately so you can guarantee that this won’t get any worse whilst I own it. There is also the usual line down the open edge where the lamination has shrunk over the years but unlike on similar sleeves this isn’t a dirty line instead the card is still a bright vibrant red and the line is very difficult to spot. Incredibly the rear is in similar pristine shape, look at the photo, this is unlaminated white card over 40 years old and it’s still white! Not yellowed with age at all, with no faults at all I can mention. Both top and bottom seams are totally unworn. All 4 corners are still sharp and well defined with no wear at all. The spine is also in pristine shape, still thick and wide with all of the writing clearly readable. I don’t want to make any overblown claims about this being the best copy you’ll ever see because the copy in my own collection is pretty hot too and I’m sure there are other equally nice copies sitting in some of the big collections out there but this sleeve will be very very difficult to beat and it’ll be a long time before you see another one in this condition openly offered for sale.

Both labels are perfect, very clean with no writing, tears or stickers and no visible spindle wear. The stamper codes in the run off grooves are 1-1N and 2-1N.

Record: The disc is equally as nice as the sleeve. Remember that this has been played less than half a dozen times in it’s lifetime and the only two owners have been someone who reviewed records for a living (and thus knew how to handle them - all of the records I obtained from him are in this sort of shape, he’s actually a classical buff so all of the pop records he received were played once or twice then boxed away in custom made boxes) and myself, who has a large personal collection and also knows how records should be handled and stored. When held under a harsh lamp there are no marks visible at all, not even hairline marks. When played it’s, well, what can I say? It’s simply perfect, there is no surface noise at all, it’s totally silent between tracks and the sound just leaps out of the speakers with no distortion at all. I played this at high volume on my best deck and all I can really say is WOW! It’s a long time since I heard this album and to hear it again from such a beautiful copy is a joy and a priviledge. I simply cannot believe that you will find a significantly better copy than this easily.
