Rare original 1963 Puerto Rico pressing of Mario Ortiz All Star Band Featuring Emma Roger & Paquito Alvarez – On The Road on Rico-Vox (RVLP 505). This was the debut release of Mario Ortiz and his orchestra, marking the beginning of one of Puerto Rico’s most influential salsa dura and big-band jazz leaders.

Arranged with a mix of guaguancó, bolero, cha-cha, guajira, and early salsa, this LP captures the raw energy of the island’s scene in the early ’60s. Features standout musicianship, including trumpet lines from Elias López, with cover/concept by Pellín Rodríguez and photography by Jorge Santana. Produced by Alfred D. Herger.

Notably, tracks defy their titles: “Mi Bomba Sonó” is actually guaguancó, and “Mambo Infierno” plays at guaguancó/salsa speed rather than mambo, showing the innovative experimentation of Ortiz’s band. A true collector’s gem from Puerto Rican salsa’s formative years.
