Mac Miller’s second posthumous album Balloonerism is a previously unreleased project that he worked on during the development of his critically acclaimed mixtape Faces, in the midst of arguably the most experimental era of his career. The album was mostly created within a two-week long “jam session” in March 2014 that took place in Mac’s Sanctuary studio. Although he ultimately shelved Balloonerism in favor of other releases, the project “was of great importance to [Mac].”

Balloonerism is characterized by its live instrumentation, jazzy influences, introspective lyrics, and deeply psychedelic atmosphere. Production on the album was primarily handled by Mac under his producer alias Larry Fisherman, although not without assistance from a core team of collaborators close to him at the time: Thundercat and Taylor Graves are both commonly credited throughout the album, and it was recorded in its entirety by Mac’s engineer Josh Berg.

The project was initially brought to light when various tracklists for Balloonerism surfaced online in 2020, two years after Mac’s untimely death. Following nearly five years of rumors regarding the album’s potential release, Mac’s estate announced an official release for Balloonerism following a teaser at Odd Future’s 2024 Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival. After revealing the album’s finalized tracklist, which includes features from SZA as well as Delusional Thomas (one of Mac’s many alter-egos), the estate released the album’s lead single “5 Dollar Pony Rides” on January 9, 2025.
