Description
This is the historic CRI (Composer’s Recordings Inc) release of 1962 devoted to the extraordinary music of maverick composer Harry Partch, performed by Partch’s own ensemble, the Gate 5 Ensemble of Sausalito, CA, and the University of Illinois Ensemble conducted by John Garvey, playing the collection of unorthodox instruments that he designed himself to play in his intricate microtonal tunings! The recordings themselves were made between 1950 and 1958. The programme comprises Castor and Pollux (from Pectrum and Percussion Dances), The Letter (with Harry Partch as vocalist), Windsong, Cloud-Chamber Music, and Scene 10 and Epilogue from the opera The Bewitched. This is a stereo/mono disc (‘monophonic recording electronically rechanneled for stereo effect’). The LP looks a little scuffed but plays perfectly well and does not appear to have been played much at all. In addition to the extensive liner notes there is a four-page insert about Partch and his music, with photographs and details of all the instruments involved in the recording. This is a real collector’s item! The item will be despatched in a purpose-built LP mailer, with cardboard stiffeners.
