Simply put, The Blues, volumes 1 and 2 (1962) and the subsequent two volumes, The Blues vol. 3 & 4 (1964) by the legendary Chess Blues artists such as Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf were the most important, influential Blues anthologies EVER issued. 

Just like the Columbia records' 1960 album 'King of Delta Blues Singers' by Robert Johnson signaled the beginning of the Delta Blues revival and a renewed interest in the deep southern blues, these four volumes released on Chess's Argo subsidiary turned the world`s attention to the Urban Blues, Chicago style and marked the beginning of the era of dominance of Chicago Blues, which pretty much continues unabated to this day. Sure enough, within a year or so from the release of the first two volumes, Rolling Stones, Manfred Mann, John Mayall and other invading Brits were caught recording their versions of these immortal blues tunes (in most cases quite unsuccessfully, but their valiant effort should be noted).

We should note that there is not a single second of filler here – all songs selected for these volumes are crème of the crop of Chicago Blues – in many ways, the finest performances by a selected artists Chess could find at the time.  To find what Chicago Blues was all about, start RIGHT HERE.

We should note that there was also a fifth volume (The Blues, vol. 5). However, it was released almost five years after the initial volume,  on a different label (Cadet), probably  as mere afterthought, and we tend not to considerate a part of the series, despite its deceptive cover which mimics the simple graphic design of the first four volumes.

THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD+(+) . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

(b)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 30:1.

(d)          Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its FAKE ("electronically rechannelled") stereo counterpart. We estimate that FAKE stereo copies of this album outnumber monos by a ratio of at least 5:1.

(e)           True Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

·       COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split top seam (between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)

-         Cover has a TINY tape residue (yellowish discoloration from the removed piece of old and aged scotch tape),(less than ¼ square inch in size)  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)  

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4  (front side) and 3 (back side)

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease)  in one of the corners.

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the top and bottom seams (nothing significant)

-         Cover has three corners slightly worn / dinged / bent.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels
