Brief Info: A rare acoustic set from the blues legend Muddy Waters. A rarely-seen vintage classic dating back to 1964, here seen on the vintage Pye International label. This copy appears little played with impressive clean playing surfaces and massively pressed. Yes, there is a gentle contact sound – mono acoustic records of course vulnerable – but this seems within the pressing and nothing to do with wear or abuse. In terms of what is on offer, this is a very fine example that will never prove easy to find better, there are no stylus scratches at all, any surface traces ultra fine and faint as seen under a bright light. The cover quite gently aged, but that also still nice.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): a single format with front laminate. This covers all the folds and ends on the back on three rear flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd with ‘Patents pending’ text. The correct original Pye International inner sleeve is included as seen.

Lamination & Front: A very fine front, the only issue of note are a couple of spine edge laminate cracks that have toned as seen. The laminate retains fine shine and clarity with no lifting and hardly any creasing. Viewed more up-close, some gentle toning is seen to politely remind of age – this is now around 53 years old – clearly white areas are quite revealing. But still a nice cover overall.

Cover Back: The main back panel has little rear wear, but again has some light patchy toning and spotting. The three flipbacks are all solid and neat with no burring to their ends. Just one fairly fine spine edge crack.

Top Edge: Hardly worn, reasonably straight for most.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Remaining sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, again quite straight with hardly any compression, the ends gently tapered in manufacture. Minimal hint of cracking with only tiny spots. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeel laminate.

Corners: Any tip rubs are small and light, very fine or better shape retained with no bashes. A little tip browning here-and-there.

Cover Summary: A very fine all-round example of this vintage 1960’s cover, mainly gentle reminders of age, but many collectors actually like that. It could prove very difficult to find much better, hardly a common album. A still attractive item that should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): almost exceptional for an inner of this age. This has the tracing paper type lining that is fully intact and strong. Just one corner crease and amazingly, no edge splits (or repairs). Relatively clean and even fresh, any discolouration is gentle and light, an impressive Pye International promotional inner, collectable in its own right.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very impressive visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. No stylus scratches, this mono record has withstood the perils of the Dansette era and the massive tracking weights, it appears little used at all. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays well, and I consider very well indeed being honest. A little gentle ‘contact’ sound evident here-and-there, surface sound, not really ‘crackle’ as such, this purely within the pressing. A gentle acoustic album, so all the more challenging, the lack of clicks and distortion clearly considerable pluses. The artist’s vocal and quiet guitar have beautiful warm tone and immense detail. There are few places for blemishes, and this has few. All frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a quality production to capture the real essence of the gentle music and performance. No tracking issues* or stylus scratches, quite honestly, this record appears hardly played. Few originals will outperform this UK pressing significantly I feel sure – a record like this has to be put into perspective – it’s very quiet and sparse – a purists blues album. How many 1964 mono copies will survive better is questionable. This is classic blues for the connoisseur, the man’s performance and presence blows away any minor surface sound. Remember also, I play all my records on a Linn LP12 Sondek, still one of the most revealing turntables still in production, such records were never designed to be played on such equipment. This will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended, unless ‘silence’ is mandatory – and good luck trying to find a copy of this classic that will truly offer that.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
