Originally released in 1999, this album from Mike Patton's post Faith No More outfit remains one of the strangest yet most rewarding albums in modern music. Coming at the end of the decade, it's an album that is a myriad of styles that resist neat categorisation. Lounge pop, surf rock, doo-wop, metal and cabaret all collide in a way that feels less like genre-hopping and more like genre-reinventing. What makes California remarkable isn't just its eclecticism but its precision. Every stylistic swerve is executed with absolute confidence. Songs like 'Retrovertigo' and 'Pink Cigarette' show a surprising tenderness and melancholy, while 'None of Them Knew They Were Robots' and 'Goodbye Sober Day' embrace manic energy, theatrical chaos and sonic excess. Mike Patton's chameleonic voice binds it all together. You can hear him crooning, scatting, shrieking, or whispering with total control. Despite its playful exterior, California carries a strange heaviness. Beneath the bombast lies a meditation on mortality, nostalgia and cultural decay. It's catchy enough to be mistaken for pop, but its full of unease. The album's lush, tape-based production only heightens its timeless quality, sounding rich and layered decades later. Now reissued, California is back in print and ready to impress another generation.
