In everything you do you need rules, without rules you have chaos, with chaos comes disorder. In this case you get Mott The Hoople and Brain Capers, it's an album made by a band that was all but finished, so all caution was thrown to the wind. Guy Stevens had returned and finally they made an album that was closer to their live sound and what they were known for at the time. It is chaotic, it is all over the place, it's messy, they are a band who no longer care what anyone thinks, it's a pre punk i don't care attitude that makes this album stand out as one of Mott's finest.
Hunter's The Journey being a stand out and The Moon Upstairs sounds very much like a Sex Pistols tune only 5 years ahead of them! Mott thought they were done and dusted until Bowie saved the day, he recognised the chaos that was Mott and the unfullfilled musical journey that lay ahead. The Mott album proved his judgement correct, as Hunter says on the live album "the last bit of good luck or bad luck we ever had was an album called Brain Capers" before belting out Angeline. It was the turning point in the career of Mott The Hoople and Ian Hunter.. Mott were to eventually implode a few years later, it was inevitable, but what a band they were.
