MORMOS – Great Wall Of China. Wah Wah Records LPS 123. Spanish release. FACTORY SEALED NEW VINYL RECORD ALBUM w/ 7" EP.Originally issued in 1971 on the French CBS label. This edition issued in 2013. Led by Jim Cuomo, formerly of Champaign-Urbana, Illinois’ Spoils Of War. Limited edition of 500 copies with a 7” EP of 5 bonus tracks and liner note insert by Jim Cuomo. The EP is inside the jacket and, at this point, I don't know what type of sleeve it comes housed in. MEMBERS: Annie The Hat (vocals), Elliott Delman (guitar, vocals), Sandy Spencer (cello, vocals), Rick Mansfield (flute, balalaika, alto recorder), Tobia Taylor (balalaika, zither, soprano recorder, vocals), and James Cuomo (domra, soprano recorder, balalaika, vocals). TRACKS: Womanbud Deborah, Great Wall Of China, Forever Seventh Loved Time, Now Is Made In America, The Crimson Uniform, Poughkeepsie, Smelling Like A Rose, Victoria Falls, Jack Of Hearts, O Mistress Mine, Cap And Bell, Walk In Walk Out, These Echoes/My Grandma Rocks, and St. Ives. 7” EP (BONUS) TRACKS: In Again Out Again, Lightning Snakes, Paranoid Nightdream, Listen To The Flavour, and Rubab To Bed. DESCRIPTION: Recorded in 1971 and issued originally only in France by CBS, the first album by post Spoils Of War band Mormos is a masterpiece of fabulous experimental psychedelic acid folk sounds and bizarre melodies. Influences from contemporaries such as The Incredible String Band are present, as are some resemblances to the recordings of other acts like Comus and Dr. Strangely Strange, but the Mormos sound creates unique atmospheres unheard in any other works of the era that can be fragile and weird in equal parts. Jim Cuomo formed Mormos after his Spoils Of War project while still living in Champaign-Urbana (home of the University of Illinois). The new group moved to France where they recorded two albums, Great Wall Of China being the first, now reissued in full glory in cooperation with Cuomo himself and with the upgrade of bonus tracks included on a 7" EP and, of course, an insert with some notes from Jim Cuomo. Limited to 500 copies only! Their 2nd album is also getting the reissue treatment and should be in shortly. SIDE BAR: Their move to France also inspired or was inspired by (not sure whose trip came first) another Champaign-Urbana based young singer-songwriter by the name of Dan Fogelberg, while there he also ended up recording an album issued on CBS of France (I believe he was part of a trio and recorded under a group name [only saw the album once decades ago and I haven’t been able to find anything on the Internet]; wonder if we’ll ever see the reissue of that album. In short order, Dan returned to the States and hooked up with Irving Azoff who got him signed to Columbia Records here (Azoff along with Bob Nutt ran Blytham Ltd. booking until he took over management of REO Speedwagon, got them signed to Epic Records, and left for Los Angeles; before REO, Blytham’s major star was The Finchly Boys). I digress a bit, but writing this down helps spark some of those old memory cells.
