· MORGEN – THE SELF-TITLED FIRST (AND ONLY) ALBUM BY STEVE MORGEN (“MORGEN”) - MEGA-RARE PSYCHEDELIC MASTERPIECE - ORIGINAL 1968 ABC/PROBE STEREO LP CPLP-4507-S.
· ORIGINAL US PRESSING
· ORIGINAL BLACK ABC-PROBE RECORDS LABEL WITH MULTICOLORED “BOXED” PROBE LOGO ON TOP OF THE LABEL
· THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, AUTHENTIC, FIRST U.S. PRESSING; THIS IS NOT A REISSUE, AN IMPORT, OR A COUNTERFEIT PRESSING.
· ORIGINAL GATEFOLD COVER, MADE OF THICK CARDBOARD (AMERICAN STYLE)
· THICK, HEAVY VINYL PRESSING
· CLEAN, WEAR-FREE LABELS
· As far as we know, this album has been unavailable on legitimate Compact Disc or in any other way, manner or format for years. The compact disc released in 2004 on UK-based Radioactive label – WHICH SOUNDS ATROCIOUS …THOUSANDS OF TIMES WORSE THAN THE ORIGINAL LP…is of suspicious quality and we believe that it is essentially a bootleg, as is the 2009 “limited edition” Greek release .

This, simply put, is one of the top-30 rarest and most coveted psychedelic albums ever recorded. Insanely rare in virtually any condition, this is a mixture of deep, hard, psychedelic guitar fuzz, vocal effects and deconstruction, sinister-sounding ornamentation, and simply great, well played and incredibly produced music. At times, the band sounds as Jimi Hendrix-meets-Joy Division-at-a-Grateful-Dead’s-Filmore-gig - and they are all having one long, strange trip into the amphetamine abyss. By all means, check out the closing lead guitar solo in ‘Begging your pardon’, which is BY FAR the best Jimi Hendrix impersonation (circa ‘Are You Experienced’ phase), I’d ever heard, bar none!. In fact, the first time I had heard this album, I was certain it WAS Jimi Hendrix, making an (uncredited) cameo appearance on the Morgen album. I guess I was wrong…
***
Very little is known of the elusive group Morgen, who recorded a one-off album for ABC’s psychedelic subsidiary Probe in 1969 and then apparently vanished. The group’s namesake leader was Steve Morgen, and while some reference books actually credit the album to him solely, Morgen was indeed a group, consisting of Steve, Rennie Genossa, Bob Maiman, and Barry Stock, all of whom supposedly hailed from Long Island, New York [PRECISELY WHERE WE ACQUIRED THIS ALBUM – BD]. Their album made no impact when originally released and has since become rare and sought-after, especially after dealers and collectors began declaring it a “psychedelic classic” in recent years. While the label “classic” might be a bit of a stretch, the album does certainly include a few very good tracks. “Welcome to the Void” is an effective opener that features some nice drumming and lead guitar work, as well as some suitably psychedelic, apocalyptic lyrics. “Of Dreams,” probably the strongest song on the album, is a gorgeous, floating psychedelic excursion highlighted by a captivating, fey vocal and some more strong guitar and drum playing. An edited single version of “Of Dreams” was featured on Arf! Arf!’s excellent compilation 30 Seconds before the Calico Wall and offers a different mix of the song, but it decidedly sounds best here, in its five-and-a-half-minute, stereo incarnation. “Beggin’ Your Pardon (Miss Joan)” had the potential to be a decent, slightly bluesy tune, but its plodding momentum and comparatively simple arrangement make it a bit of a sleeper, especially after the psychedelic splendor of “Of Dreams.” It’s likely the album’s weakest offering. “Eternity in Between” is more engaging, and it features some guitar work that sounds almost like a tribute to The Who’s Pete Townshend, specifically, some chord changes borrowed from Tommy’s “Underture,” as well as the guitar pickup switch feedback sound that Townshend used liberally on signature Who tunes like “Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere.” “Purple” is a very nice song propelled by a good drumbeat and underscored by droning guitar leads. It’s also perhaps the best showcase for Steve Morgen’s soft vocals. “She’s the Nitetime,” a catchy tune with good musicianship all around and more nice vocal contributions from Steve, is another major highlight of the album. The eleven-minute closer “Love” sounds a little reminiscent of The Doors’ “When the Music’s Over” in its vocal phrases, and is narrowly rescued from tedium by a rather good guitar solo halfway through.

CONDITION:
RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD+ . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)
(b) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+ (VG+)
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

- Cover has a partially split spine (between 2 and 4 inches / 5 to 10 centimeters)
- Cover has a slight warp in one corner; this has absolutely no effect on the record.
- Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4 (front side) and 6 (back side)
- Cover shows some yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.
- Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine
- Cover has some visible wear on all three seams
- Front cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)
