Description
Very Rare 10" 78 by Briant Holland With The Band. Released in 1958 on Detroit label KUDO Records. Kudo #667. Songs are: "(Where's The Joy?) In Nature Boy" b/w "Shock".
Brian Holland had only a handful of recordings as a solo artist. His first was for Kudo under the name of Briant. The A side "Where’s the joy nature boy" was written by Joe Howard. The flip side "Shock" was written by Berry Gordy and Robert Gordy. Shortly after this release Brian would go on to the newly formed Rayber Voices on Gladstone. When Rayber developed into Tamla and Motown, Brian would join forces with his brother Eddie and Lamont Dozier to form one of popular music’s most successful song writing teams. Towards the end of the sixties, Holland-Dozier-Holland, formed their own label Invictus where Brian had a couple of releases including "I’m so glad".
Robert West's Kudo label was based in Room 1114 in the United Artists building in the heart of Downtown Detroit. Obviously impressed by the Falcons, they would provide Kudo's first release. It was "This heart of mine", written by a young Bob Hamilton, who would go on to write many songs for the Golden World empire. . There were only a handful of other releases on the Kudo label during its short life including The Falcons,Marv Johnson, Nancy Peters, Hindle Butts, Jumpin' Joe Howard, Billy Kope and the Quadrells and Billy Sharp and his Sharptones. The label provided a solid foundation for a number of future VIP’s. Label head Robert West went on to start the labels Bumble Bee, Flick, Contour and Lu Pine
On to the sound: Excellent Detroit R&B Group Vocal/Proto-soul. The whole backing band is incredible, especially the guitar on it which is just fantastic. The Band is most likely the Hindle Butts Band (who also had a release on this Detroit label). Hollands voice is outstanding, and ohh those backing voices (which may include Eddie Holland, Marv Johnson it is also possible that some of the Falcons sang back-ups). The sound does bring to mind some of the early Falcons recordings. This is a very important Detroit rarity as it breaks the ground for what would become "THE MOTOWN SOUND" and the evolution of Detroit Soul. A must have rarity for any fan/collector of Group Vocal/R&B/Motown/Northern Soul
Conservatively graded at Ex condition (9-). Record retains nice glossy luster, some very light storage marks. Record appears played two or three times at most. Very well taken care of over the years. Record has been professionaly cleaned on VPI with distilled water. 45 is listed in Manship guide at 350 Pounds (approximately $650+ US Dollars).
Grading Scale
10: Mint Perfect record, clean gloss, no marks, beautiful in every way. Very few records will make mint.
9: Mint- Very clean, only a few light marks. A great record.
8: Condition between 7 and 9.
7: VG+ Used, but not abused. Light scratches only. Should play, and look very nice with minimal surface noise.
6: VG Still a nice record. Looks a bit used, light scratches, no gouges, still plays well, some surface noise
5: VG- A bit rough but will play ok. Fills the collection.
4: G Plays very rough. Has multiple scratches. What a bargain!!
3-2-1: It only goes down from here.
