Description
“The Complete Plugged Nickel Sessions" on MOSAIC RECORDS (MQ10-158) featuring the classic Miles Davis quintet with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams performing extended versions of Miles Davis staples such as "Walkin", "If I Were a Bell", 'Stella By Starlight", "Milestones", "My Funny Valentine", etc. These epochal sessions were recorded LIVE at the Plugged Nickel in Chicago on December 22 & 23, 1965.
What's very interesting about these sets is the freshness of each rendition. That is, some songs are represented in this collection more than once but each version is unique and veers off into unexpected tangents that illustrate how these master musicians were constantly challenging each other with consistent creativity. As a former saxophonist, I am astounded by the freshness and excitement in Wayne Shorter's approach - but I would NOT want to transcribe his solos, which gurgle with technical virtuousity and oblique surprises at every moment!
This Mosaic box set is OUT OF PRINT. It was a limited, numbered edition of 5,000 and this auction item is #501 in that sequence. When dealing with numbered editions - whether in the world of art or LPs - lower numbers earlier in the sequence are more desireable and collectible.
The box and 12-page booklet are in like-new condition with no sign of wear except for some price sticker residue on the front of the box. As with all Mosaic box sets, the production values and attention to detail are stellar; the booklet's narrative and photographs are definitive. The LPs are NM and appear to be rarely played or, in some cases, unplayed. Indeed, on 3 of these platters I encountered a cherry spindle hole while play-grading.
A reasonable reserve has been set for this historic item.
