Here, you get what you pay for – SAFE PACKING in BOXES using 7mm DOUBLE-WALL STIFFENERS including full side protection and bubble wrap, the records removed from the covers of course. All this very safe packing means I lose money on every box I post, but safe delivery is, and will always be paramount. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives. Also, I will pay for insurance on any record that sells for over £100 at NO extra cost – that is UK and abroad. Also I aim to post the very same day after payment is received if possible. Label/Format: CBS with matt textured surfaces. A rare example with one side showing 33 1/3 speed indication, the other with just 33. This will rarely be seen or offered.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, still fresh and attractive with fine moderate spindle marks on side two, fewer and even lighter on one. The vintage rarer stereo record plays impressively with little unwanted.

Warps or Lateral Movement: Assume all records I offer have no significant warping or lateral movement to cause sound or tracking issues. All should play fine even on budget turntables.

Rarity: Any early copy of this jazz masterpiece are scarce. Initially issued on Fontana for a brief time in the UK, then repressed on the CBS label in 1962. Early copies on that label were pressed by Philips. Stereo copies from the early to mid-1960s are more elusive, especially in better conditions.

Original Year of Release: 1959 [this copy from about 1965 as confirmed by the original date-coded inner sleeve]

Matrix Nos: AA885113 1Y=1//420 [SBPG 62066 1Y] & [AA885113 2Y=1//420 [SBPG 62066 2Y] (the first matrixes are very large and machine punched, the bracketed ones are finer and scripted). These matrixes styles are by Philips.

Musicians: Miles Davis – trumpet, band leader; Julian ‘Cannonball’ Adderley – alto saxophone; Paul Chambers – double bass; John Coltrane – tenor saxophone; Bill Evans – piano; Wynton Kelly – piano.

Brief Info: For me, the coolest and one of the most wonderful albums ever made – and that within any genre of music. This is simply a masterpiece and it has to be Davis’s greatest ever piece of work backed by other incredible musicians. Any music-lover, and even non-jazz fans could not be failed to be impressed with this beautiful album. Melodic, smooth and catchy with tunes that get into the subconscious immediately. It features the legendary John Coltrane on tenor and all musicians play impeccably. The session was beautifully recorded and it sold in considerable numbers for a jazz record, it is said to be the biggest selling album within the genre. This vintage copy from the mid-1960s, that includes a rare mix of 33 and 33 1/3 CBS textured labels will rarely be seen. The sound remains very impressive with little unwanted – any gentle tape sound is perfectly natural and correct, forget any vintage sound limitations or blemishes, simply enjoy the music that is as magical now as it was way back then. A copy that also has a very impressive cover and inner sleeve.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and I think undergraded for a cover this great age, highly tempted to add the extra (+). A single format with the front laminated, this covers all folds and ends on three rear flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and smooth and including the very large arrowed ‘STEREO’ sticker on what is a mono prefix cover. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse with ‘Patents pending’ text. The vintage date-coded inner sleeve is also included.

Lamination & Front: A superb, age-defying front with still shiny, quite fresh and clear laminate that has no lifting and hardly any traces of creasing. Any dulling mild as seen under light and one of the very best I have seen on any 1960s pressing of this monumental album.

Cover Back: The matt main back has avoided any creasing or rubbing, but it does give polite clues of its considerable age with some relatively mild darkening of the white card. The very large stereo sticker has also darkened, but has never been picked at or removed and gives this rarer stereo copy more ‘ authority’. Clearly, with few opting for the stereo version at this time, CBS did not deem a dedicated extra stereo cover worthy of manufacture for financial reasons. The hand-applied stereo sticker had to be sufficient for more specialist stereo copies at this time. All three flipbacks are in amazing condition, solid clean, and incredibly, the laminate on them has NO creasing, end burring or grime line formation on the laminate ends. All back text is by jazz legend Benny Green. Personally, I treasure a cover that politely reminds of its authentic age and vintage – it gives that reassuring satisfaction of owning the genuine article.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both reasonably straight, very smooth with no wear to the fully laminated edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Even this entrance edge has minimal hint of thickening and is totally natural as such. The end of the card has darkened, and at this age I think it’s earned the right.

Spine and Text: Gently bowed with tight laminate, but very solidt with minimal compression, the ends nipped in manufacture. All text is totally unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate which is very smooth over the full length.

Corners: All again in fantastic condition with any tip rubs minuscule. Near mint shape retained with no knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: A superb example of this legendary jazz classic cover, one the simply exudes class and one that will prove very difficult to find much better from this period. This beautiful, only gently aged, but hardly worn item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): yes darkened with age, but little else to fault. This vintage inner is virtually uncreased with two pristine window circles and the polylining still quite fresh and reasonably clear. All edges are naturally intact. One side is plain, the text side bold and clear and with the 025 date-code (February 1965). It being British patented with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text. Like the main cover, this is politely aged, just the way I like them.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: grading less would hardly be doing this lovely record full justice. A very fine visual copy that is clean with respectable shine and very solidly pressed on robust Philips pressed vinyl. A copy appearing played several times, but I would suggest with due care on all the evidence with any surface marks very light, mostly wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little even registers. Visually a very nice vintage copy of this masterpiece that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This sublime jazz classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. You get a genuine sense of history simply by removing it from the cover. This offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed – the odd sporadic click probably being near impossible to avoid as barest minimum on a record around 55-years-old – and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Also, this does have some very quiet passages. Few available copies from this golden-era will outperform this I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played with due care and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. The wispy surface blemishes probably from a cleaning cloth used by the original discerning owner which were recommended at the time. Nothing of any note spoilt the experience and pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. No music-lovers household should be without a copy of this legendary album – simply immerse yourself in the coolest, relaxing jazz album ever issued. It will prove difficult to find significantly better from this time, and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new Nessie Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
