?? MIKE HAYNES introducing mike haynes - UK LP PRIVATE PRESS FOLK on DEROY

This record is pressed on the incredibly collectable and highly saught after DEROY PRODUCTIONS label, High Bank Studio, Carnforth, the label is a grey company blank, with the side number, artist and title neatly handwritten.

The matrix number is scratched into the dead wax area DER928-A A1A and DER928-B A1A. This is correct for 1973, both sides carrying the same number, the prefix DER and the number being scratched not stamped.

This is a genuine authentic first pressing, and super rare, the English rustic loner male vocal folk on this disc is excellent, the quality of the recording isn't the best, it's mono and as the sleeve states, the record was made from...

"original tape recordings were made by Laurie Edwards ("Star Sounds") during the Summer of 1973 in the Artist's home at Market Drayton, Shropshire, using a Tandberg 3041-X Tape Recorder and an AKG D.1200 microphone. Laurie also edited the tapes all ready for transfer to disc by Deroy Studios, Carnforth, Lancs. The original colour slide for the cover and graphic art work by Albert Edwards. Photographic art work by Jiri Borsky. All vocals and guitar, of course by Mike Haynes. STAR SOUND 1973"

The reference to "colour slide for the cover" makes this sleeve appear to be a mock up of what was to have been... the sleeve is actually two pieces of blue card, cut to 12" square, with an A4 photostat sheet stuck to the front and reverse these photostat pages have been glued into situ and the glue has over time, begun to discolour and show through... this sleeve has then been placed inside a plastic sleeve and sellotaped into position... this is how the sleeve was made and constructed at the time... and as no further copies have been found of this record, in any form... it must be assumed that this record never made it past this stage.

Deroy Sound Service in 1973 offered a tape-to-disc recording service... and were happy to produce one off quantity records... for a 1 off 12" LP of this duration... the record being cut on a Neumann automated variable pitch lathe... Therefore, this could be the only copy ever made... not all one-off pressings were made on acetate!

To help get an idea of this record, please check out the two slideshows in this description, with recordings of two tracks from the disc, not physically or electronically cleaned or enhanced... so a raw sound, the images are of the actual record and sleeve... some close-ups taken to make the - slideshow appear a little more interesting.

Side 1
- BALLAD OF THE CRYSTAL MAN (Donovan)
- LAST THING ON MY MIND (Tom Paxton)
- HOP JOIN (Mississippi John Hurt)
- I HAVE NO TIME (Bert Jansch)
- DREAMS OF LOVE (Bert Jansch)
- WILD FLYING DOVE (Tom Paxton)
- JUST LIKE ANYTHING (Jackson C Frank)

Side 2
- THE BALLAD OF GERALDINE (Donovan)
- RAMBLIN' BOY (Tom Paxton)
- ROAD OF NO RETURN (Alex Campbell)
- COCAINE BLUES (Anon)
- HOLD ON TO ME BABE (Tom Paxton)

It's ashame that Mike didn't record any self-penned tracks, but these contemporary covers are certainly worth it. The disc has some very light surface marks, will be given a good clean before despatch. The sleeve has some discolouration due to - glue and sellotape... this is a result of ageing and nothing to do with mis-handling.
