MIGHTY BABY "MIGHTY BABY" RARE Original 1970 LP (Head/Chess) LPS-025 housed in gatefold sleeve w/great cover graphics. VG+/MINT! One of the best British Psychedelic records of the era, this is the hard-to-find U.S. pressing. Featuring "Egyptian Tomb", "House Without Windows" & 6 more classic tracks. Produced by Guy Stevens, cover by Martin Sharp.
The Action were one of the top Mod bands in London in the mid sixties. But by 1968, the times were a-changin' & a heavier Psychedelic sound was the calling card for bands playing such underground clubs as Middle Earth & Mother's. The Motown R&B sound had given way to long moody pieces dominated by guitar solos & fancy flute & keyboard passages. So it was time to re-think the direction & image of the group. Lead vocalist Reg King was out & Martin Stone (formerly with Savoy Brown) joined as lead guitarist freeing up Alan “Bam” King for lead vocals & rhythm guitar duties.. Ian Whiteman was recruited for keyboards & the occasional sax & flute & the band was re-named Mighty Baby. The rhythm section of Mike Evans (bass) & Roger Powell remained intact from the Action days. The band did some successful gigs at the hip London clubs & signed with the new label Head Records. No expense was spared on the album. It was produced by the legendary Guy Stevens, the man responsible for Mott the Hoople, Free, Spooky Tooth, Procol Harum & the Skip Bifferty version of Heavy Jelly as well as introducing many obscure American R&B artists to England via his Sue Records imprint. Fantastic psychedelic cover art was supplied by Martin Sharp, the artist responsible for Cream's “Disraeli Gears” & “Wheels Of Fire” graphics as well as co-author of “Tales Of Brave Ulysses” & “Anyone For Tennis” with Eric Clapton. But Head Records hit a snag when EMI claimed that the group was under contract to them due to an earlier agreement with the members of the Action. The new label was under-funded & was not able to recover from the legal onslaught which delayed the release of the album until 1970. But the wait was worth it- “Mighty Baby” was a fantastic Psychedelic record. Original English copies are very hard to find. It was released in the United States via an arrangement with Chess Records although it remained a obscurity LP from either country. Highlights include “House Without Windows” & “Egyptian Tomb” but all 8 tracks are very good. The band soldiered on for one more album- “Jug Of Love” for Blue Horizon but it lacked the punch of their debut effort. Evans, Powell & Whiteman formed the Sufi influenced Habibiya, Martin Stone went on to Chilli Willi & the Red Hot Peppers while Alan King joined Ace . Mighty Baby has gained stature over the years & is now considered essential listening for fans of late 60s-early 70s British Psychedelia.

Gatefold cover looks nearly new w/no tears or writing. The only flaws are minor corner wear & edge wear along the top w/slight seam separation in the middle & toward the right edge. For this reason, we give it a VG+ grading. MINT record w/pink & lime-green Head labels. It has virtually no wear & has received very few plays. Bought new & factory sealed w/top edge wear resulting from shipping.
