MICHAEL YONKERS "GOODBYE SUNBAL" (U.S.PRIVATE) 1974 SEALED Perhaps Yonkers best album, full of stunning folk songs and arresting arrangements, Goodby Sunball is a marvellous piece of work. From the delicacy of love songs like "Angel of the Snow," "Someone Like You" and "Day of Jubilee" to the extremely odd sonics of the closing track, every song transports the listener into Yonkers' idiosyncratic world - where flowers abound and the morning always seems to be breaking, and where love can never be guaranteed.
Some of these songs should be classics of the genre - such as the astonishing "Another Day" or the spectral "Strange and Lonely Land." Perhaps they are, but Yonkers is criminally overlooked.
Not as experimental as Grimwood, Yonkers' next album, Goodby Sunball is almost as fearless and unique, while its song set is far stronger. Brilliant stuff.
