Michael Garrick Quintet

(33rpm Vinyl Record)

'October Woman'

~~~~~
Here's your chance to own an extremely rare original and much sought after album by this icon of British jazz!  Released in 1965, this album has never made it to CD and vinyl copies rarely make an appearance anywhere. An added bonus is that this one has had a well-cared-for life!
Back sleeve notes by Michael Garrick
The Quintet is an outcome of Jeremy Robson's Poetry and Jazz concerts, where my regular trio has been frequently augmented by Jo and Shake.  The tunes have been written more or less specifically for these musicians, in particular Little Girl and October Woman.
The material itself is mostly conventional in that it works from preconceived melodies.  The exception is Anthem, where there is ‘free’ blowing over a 5/4 pulse using only the not3es of
the scale on which the piece is built.  It is associated with Easter.
The Seven Pillars is really a misnomer, since this piece was originally conceived in 7/4 time, in which it now no longer is.
Sweet and Sugary Candy. We thought we’d take a glance in a backward direction to see how the bricks and mortar of the earlier jazz was weathering.  We were overjoyed and not a little humbled by what we found.
Blue Scene takes its flavour from the ‘soul’ movement of the late 1950s and is a kind of elegy for a number of jazz clubs which closed their doors to jazz in face of the highly commercialized ‘beat’ wave.
Return of an Angel and Echoes are as descriptive as their titles may allow them to be.
Sketches of Israel was a slow, rhapsodic theme written in the first place for a descriptive poem by Jeremy Robson.  Here we give it quite a different treatment.
Fairies of Oneiros.  Oneiros is the god of dreams.  ‘Fairies’ is an unfashionable term these days, but for me it refers to those beings to hover on the threshold of our consciousness, never letting us see too much.
