Label/Format: Harvest – Original green and yellow format with no EMI logos and including the ‘Gramophone Co Ltd’ text on the rims. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with spindle marks less than moderate mostly seen under angled light.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. A very good weight for this very early-pressed record.

Rarity: Scarce like most of the early pre-EMI Harvest albums, very few sold in substantial numbers and this is no real exception. Although, due to the airplay given by John Peel, who was a big fan of this man, it did make a brief chart appearance at 45. This is a lovely copy also, played a few times if the spindle evidence is to be used as a guide, but with the utmost care as the playing surfaces are in superb clean conditions.

Brief Info: Regarded by many as his finest ever album, issued only eight months after his Harvest debut. Not really ‘progressive’ as such, but not an easy artist to pigeon-hole and Harvest is most well-known for its ‘progressive’ acts. This features very strong material and great guitar by Mick Ronson before later joining David Bowie to form the Spiders from Mars. The album’s best known song is ‘Postcard of Scarborough’, which according to Record Collector magazine was said to be Peel’s wife Sheila’s favourite song of all time. This very early pressed copy is a beauty, sound quality is top drawer with practically nothing to fault and the cover is little short of immaculate. A scarce opportunity for Harvest collectors to own one of the earliest titles in the illustrious catalogue in exceptional condition – don’t lose this one.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): and probably undergraded as such. A gatefold format that is laminated on the front and back. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group.

Lamination – Front & Back: Very clean, fresh with superb shine and clarity with barely even a trace of any friction rubs or dulling, even viewed under light. All fully adhered with no lifting or blisters and just a small few surface creases that barely even show with normal viewing. Minor record impression on the back near the top of the back (which is inverted compared to standard cover construction). Both sides will prove very difficult to find better and this does the artwork near maximum justice.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little short of perfect – this looks fantastic.

Top Edges: Both practically as made, fully laminated and very straight.

Bottom Edges: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Record is stored on the back edge, the front on this one has opened due to the sparse original glue drying out. I decided to leave this alone as re-gluing can cause the cover to bow and this is so very straight, it’s best left as is (I feel).

Spine and Text: Apart from a natural central recess due to opening, this spine is almost as made and shows barely any real sear. Solid, straight with any compression modest. Folded quite square so thed right edges meet up very closely together and very close to parallel. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: Any tip rubbing is tiny and very light with excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A really lovely looking vintage Harvest cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most collectors.

The Inner: EXCELLENT: with little to fault bar some very mild surface creasing which are more like ripples. This is the plain white, unlined solid type, this has aged little with any glue darkening on the seams very light indeed and all edges secure.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and only marked down from Mint(-) due to a few more spindle marks on the labels than I usually like to see. The playing surfaces themselves are superbly clean with barely any surface marks, any traces seen under light are within the pressing. A lovely fresh visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed on thick vinyl. A copy played far less than the less than moderate spindle marks may suggest I feel, some owners simply used the labels to meet the spindle to the hole, hence spindle marks can and often do lie. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This fantastic record plays up to its high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong sound that is superbly produced too, any traces of surface sound were just briefly noted on the first song, but I emphasise quickly, very brief only and only light too. Most of anything lost in the loud mix and sound. That apart, simply fantastic and musically this is a gem of an album and for me, Chapman’s best ever. All frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound – this a genuine hi-fi recording that I enjoyed immensely. No pops or clicks were noted and most listeners will enjoy this one. I still feel many underrate this wonderful man’s work, the early Harvest titles are especially brilliant. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played only modestly, and without doubt, very carefully and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to match or find significantly better and is strongly recommended. If the very brief and light crackle traces on the the first song are an issue, do not bid, their level of sound will probably depend on how sensitive the equipment is this record will be played on.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
