In 1981, Brian Slagel, founder of Metal Blade Records, decided to put out a compilation of unsigned, underground metal bands. Throughout the 80s and early 90s he continued to release more volumes of the compilations. Metal Massacre XII was released in 1995 and was the final Metal Massacre album until Metal Massacre XIII, released 11 years later in 2006. Metal Massacre XIII differed from the previous releases which featured primarily unsigned bands, containing mostly established bands on the Metal Blade roster. The "Metal Massacre" compilations played a large part in the early history of heavy metal. Back in 1981 Brian Slagel decided to put together a compilation of various unsigned, underground metal bands. The resulting Metal Massacre series became the cornerstone of Metal Blade Records, one of the few American metal indie labels that still exists today. This is where Slayer, Overkill, Sacred Reich, Armored Saint, Lizzy Borden, Fates Warning, Metal Church and even Metallica among many others got their start.

Although Lars doesn't even have a band, he still asks friend Brian Slagel (founder of Metal Blade Records), if he can record a track for the upcoming compilation album, Metal Massacre. Slagel agrees, and Lars recruits James Hetfield to sing and play guitar.
