Max Roach - We Insist! Max Roach and Oscar Brown Jr’s Freedom Now Suite Candid 8002 1960
This is an extremely rare copy of Max Roach’s Landmark and controversial album, The Freedom Now Suite. Original MONO Press of this album. I’ve only ever seen the stereo 9002 series, this is the only Mono 8002 that I’ve ever seen. And it’s in glorious condition.
This album was originally commissioned by the NAACP to commemorate the centennial (1963) of the Emnacipation Proclomation, but Roach and Co-Writer Oscar Brown, Jr. decided to record it early as a tribute to the newly independent nations of Africa and the burgeoning civil rights movement, particularly the Sit-In protesters who are immortalized on the front cover. The music is perhaps the best of Roach’s illustrious career, including career defining work from his then wife Abbey Lincoln, and solid play from Coleman Hawkins (perhaps his last great work), Booker Little and Olantuji. Along with Randy Weston’s Uhuru Afrika (check my other auctions for that record) this was one of the earliest musical salvos in the quest for Civil Rights in America. Highlights include the bone-chilling renditions of "Driva’ Man", and "Triptych" and the stirring "All Africa" and "Freedom Day". An outstanding addition to a true collector’s library.
Cover/Record: Cover is NM: No wear, only a barely noticeable green pencil mark near the top. I don’t think it even comes out on the picture. The record is VG++ there are some very light scuffs and what appears to be a factory defect on the vinyl which causes some very very light pops, which are only audible because of the overall lack of surface noise and the fact this is a part of the record where there is so much silence, jut before Abbey Lincoln lets loose with the screaming in the "Protest" section of Triptych, in my opinion, even at extremely high volume it does not affect the play of the record. Overall simply gorgeous playback.
