DESCRIPTION: Super Rare original 1982 pressing LP, made in Germany. Gatefold cover.Unusual music composed for an orchestra of all things plucked (a "zupforchester" featuring a variety of guitars, mandolins, banjos, etc.), containing one side of first recordings of contemporary works and one side of classical pieces. The highlight is the great experimental Kagel piece, and this lp remains its only existing recording, never released elsewhere. Amazingly, all of the music here is performed by a youth orchestra, the Jugendzupforchester Baden-Wurttemberg under the direction of Gunther Siegwarth, plus they are joined by soloists Siegfried Behrend on the Weiss piece and Konrad Wolki on the Mozart.
Kagel is a composer of experimental music and music-theater, conductor, and filmmaker who studied literature under Jorge Luis Borges; he was influenced by Karlheinz Stockhausen, John Cage, Erik Satie, and Harry Partch, he worked on early electronic music at the WDR Koln studios alongside Herbert Eimert, Robert Beyer, Gottfried Michel Koenig, Bruno Maderna, Konrad Boehmer, Herbert Brun, Karel Goeyvaerts, Bengt Hambraeus, Henri Pousseur, Anestis Logothetis, Gyorgi Ligeti, and Franco Evangelisti, and he lectured at the famous Darmstadt courses where he mingled with Luigi Nono, Earle Brown, Pierre Boulez, and Olivier Messiaen. Baumann studied composition with Paul Hoffer and Boris Blacher and conducting with Sergiu Celibidache.
