Hi, up for auction here is a seldom seen piece of vinyl. This is the semi-legendary MASQUE -The Dead Of Night 12” single, EP, album, not sure what to class it as. Released in 1988 in the U.K. on the RKT Records label. Catalog # CM0121.

Not certain, but I believe this was the one and only release from this band. * I actually saw them play ‘live ‘by accident’ one Monday night back in the mid - late 1980’s. I used to go to a rock disco in Nottingham city centre that was held in a night club called ‘Zhivago’s, (long gone; now a ‘Vision Express’!!?) Anyway, this particular Monday, instead of the usual ‘disco, MASQUE were set up one of the dance floors!! Can’t remember much about them to be honest, except they had a female lead singer, were a solid & accomplished band and were heavily influenced by ‘Maiden!! - Even down to their wardrobe!! Surprisingly, didn’t hear much else from this semi-local band and even now, info on what happened to them seems scant.

Anyway, back to this item - as for the condition, I’m a collector myself and pretty critical when rating items. That said, the vinyl is in near MINT condition!! I can barely see a mark, let alone a scratch on either side - even examined closely under a bright light. One or two very light spindle marks on both sides that can only be seen under a bright light. Very well cared for, with no ingrained dirt in the grooves, etc. Some light static dust and that’s all. Haven’t played this in years, but visually I’d rate it at a firm 8.5 out of 10.

The cover is also in overall superb condition; again examined closely there’s only a couple of minor issues I can see. First, the very bottom of the left corner seems to have been ‘nibbled’ by something. A mouse or ‘heavy metal hamster’? I don’t know, it was like this when I got it. - It’s not at all bad, around ¾” (2cm) long with a few tiny light ‘tooth’ indentations only (NOT holes) above this. There’s also some ‘burring’ along the length of the front opening edge which is to be expected. Also one small and light ‘split’ on the centre edge of the spine where the title is. - The good news is that there is NO ringwear, ink loss, fading or repairs anywhere on the cover. It hasn’t been touched up to upgrade or disguise its condition. Overall, I’d rate at a firm 7 out of 10.

The plain white paper/polythene inner sleeve is also the original with no splits, wear, stains, etc. An 8.5 out of 10.

There you go – a superb and hard to find vintage item for the MASQUE/ NWOBHM aficionado/collector. In above average condition I’d say for being nigh on 23 years old now.
