In 1983, Marillion's debut arrived like a defiant gesture against the tide. Recorded at London's Marquee Studios, it channelled the grand theatricality of 70s prog through the raw nerves of the Thatcher era. Fish's lyrics cut deep -self-lacerating and vividly British - while the band matched his drama with intricate, surging arrangements. The title track opens as a lament and builds into a storm, Fish's voice veering between confession and performance. 'He Knows You Know' dives into addiction's spiral with the intensity tempered by Mark Kelly's eerie synths while 'Garden Party' mocks the elite with gleeful precision.
