Description
THE MAMA'S AND THE PAPA'S
"If You Can Believe Your Eyes And Ears"
RARE! In 1966 when this 1st LP was released it featured a cover that pictured the group in a bathtub with the toilet in plain sight next to it. For whatever reason the prudish powers that be decided that the toilet was offensive. This cover was quickly withdrawn and an altered cover with a contents box inserted that hid the toilet.
What most people don't know is that the offensive 'toilet cover' was issued elsewhere as well as the US, and was also WITHDRAWN in those countries - apparently much more successfully, since you just never see a European 'toilet cover.' Does it really exist? Well, yes, and here's PROOF.
This is the original 1966 FRANCE RCA 430.901S MONO 1st pressing of that 1st LP, WITH the toilet cover. In my experience I would say this is about 100 times more rare than it's American cousin. For Mama's And Papa's collectors this should be near the top of the 'holy grail' list, if not in fact on top.
SAME TRACKS AS US:
- Monday Monday
- Straight Shooter
- Got A Feelin'
- I Call Your Name
- Do You Wanna Dance
- Go Where You Wanna Go
- California Dreamin'
- Spanish Harlem
- Somebody Groovy
- Hey Girl
- You Baby
- The In Crowd
The very lightweight laminated flip-back cover is slightly 'wavy' but clean. No writing, which is amazing for a French record. There is some old sticker residue in the upper right corner (removable), light record storage impression, a short tear in the back cover near the bottom left, and the almost non-existent 'spine' (just a fold in the construction, really) has 4" center seam split. 'The Mamas And Papas' is clearly visible on the 'spine' above the split, and the stock number is present below the split.
The LP has play wear, mostly superficial scuffs & scratches, and a gold foil ID sticker on one label.
Incredibly rare and since the cover is 95% of the importance here, well worth having in any rare records collection.
Overall a VG+ mega-rare cover and a
