As British bands like Yes, ELP, and Genesis extended the borders of rock & roll, John McLaughlin had seized the opportunity to do the same with jazz. The first stars of the jazz/rock fusion camp, the Mahavishnu Orchestra played sellout concerts, sold records in quantities previously unheard of by jazz musicians, and captured a crossover audience of forward-looking jazz devotees and progressive rock fans. 

The music on The Inner Mounting Flame is incendiary and highly improvisational. Well-conceived unison melodic passages structure each tune, and McLaughlin and company play like the virtuosos they are throughout. "The Noonward Race" features a bluesy, yet harmonically dissonant solo from McLaughlin, and the frenetic drumming of Billy Cobham. In contrast, in "A Lotus on Irish Streams," McLaughlin soars passionately on an acoustic guitar, while violinist Jerry Goodman adds a simple, folky melody.

Here is a true expression of real guitar genius, the vinyl meeting of the guitar gods Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin’s Love Devotion Surrender. Recorded on the heels of their power house smashes Santana’s Caravanserai and The Mahavishnu Orchestra’s Birds Of Fire (FRM 31996), this amazing album even tore up the pop music charts and has been a jazz fusion staple ever since.

The album consisted of five tracks, several of them with extended timings which gave the two experts room to jam and free form their creative artistry to new levels. With new readings of the traditional Let Us Go Into The House Of The Lord, as well as two John Coltrane interpretations A Love Supreme and Naima, Santana and McLaughlin truly delivered the goods with this timeless audiophile masterpiece!

The other players on this fine release include the Santana band’s notables Michael Shrieve, Doug Rauch, and Armando Peraza, as well as jazz legend Larry Young on organ, and future jazz fusion superstars Billy Cobham and Jan Hammer from The Mahavishnu Orchestra. Wow!

This amazing limited edition release was impeccably mastered from the original Columbia Records tapes by Joe Reagoso (Santana and Mahavishnu Orchestra) and Kevin Gray at AcousTech and pressed at RTI with Sony Music. Love Devotion Surrender also includes a limited edition original gatefold cover with all of the original artwork elements form this 1972 release.
