Magnum debuted here with a melodic hard rock sound which is not overly melodic in the soon-to-develop AOR sense and it's got some progressive overtones as well. Standing on the middle-ground of these sounds and got lumped with NWoBHM artists certainly didn't make their job easier, because this band fit outside of each camp.
Vocalist Bob Catley is the key of the group, later all the world recognized his majestic voice, but it was first caught on a recording here.
The singing is top-notch in the title-track where the hard rocking riffs also take you by storm (courtesy of Tony Clarkin) and some of their greatest ever. Songs like the philosophic Universe, the catchy Invasion or the gentle vocal-driven All That Is Real are further gems and the only downside is Baby Rock Me with its too simple (primitive) structure it fails to be interesting, both in the build-up and the lyrics, especially put in contrast with the real greats here.
