Los Angeles band Magnum - no relation to the sword and scorcery 80s metal crew of the same name - cut just one record in 1974, a raw funk and soul session that has since become a cult artefact. Driven by heavy horns, choppy guitars and a tight rhythm section, the group balance social commentary with deep dancefloor pull. 'Evolution' and 'Natural Juices' carry the fire of early 70s Black consciousness, while 'Your Mind' and 'It's The Music That Makes Us Do It' push James Brown's blueprint into grittier territory. On the flip, 'Witch Doctor's Brew' drips with psychedelic overtones, before 'Funky Junky' and 'Composition Seven' close things out in heavy, brass-laden style. Commercially overlooked at the time, this rediscovery shows Magnum at their most urgent - unpolished, powerful, and completely locked into the spirit of mid-70s funk.
