The Maddox Brothers and Rose brought their raucous live shows, rambunctious onstage personas, and hybrid musical style to audiences all over the country from the '30s to the '50s. The Modesto-based band, credited with originating the slap-bass style that came to define the sound of rockabilly, influenced generations of musicians and played a large role in the formation of the "Bakersfield Sound". The Maddoxes were Oakies who came from Boas, Ala., and rode the rails to California during the Great Depression, picking fruit to get by and eventually settling in the San Joaquin Valley. A young Fred Maddox talked a local furniture store into sponsoring a radio show featuring the Maddox Brothers band, but the company insisted upon the band having a girl singer. Rose Maddox, then 11 years old, was recruited for the job. The group outlasted the Depression and World War II, finally breaking up in 1954.
Records are shipped in a specially sized boxes ( 4 inch or 7 1/2 inch depending on number of records ) and packaged for the utmost protection. We use 200 # test boxes with thick double-wall cardboard to sandwich the records, then the sandwich is amply wrapped in bubble wrap and packing peanuts are added to prevent movement and damage. We then seal the box and stamp 'Fragile' and 'Do Not Bend' in red ink. VISUAL GRADING FOR 78s Records are graded by visual standards, not aural. The grading of 78 RPM records remains the most difficult of all grading to perform. Since all 78's play with a degree of surface noise and many have some wear factor and age impairments, it is almost impossible to maintain a consistent grading system for all the different labels and each decade. Remember not all 78s are created equal. Manufacturing practices and qualities varied. 78s are very fragile and we highly recommend insurance. We pack these well but they can break. N. Pristine: Full Gloss, perfect clear surfaces (no chips, dings, scuffs, or scratches). Label bright and unblemished. A rare condition for any record that was popular with it's owner.

E+. Mint: One or two small scuffs. Solid gloss. Label is like new.

E. Near Mint: A few more light scuffs with a few small scratches. Mostly glossy. Very enjoyable listening. Label might be fading a little with some wear noticeable.

E-. Excellent: Some general, small scratching and scuffing to surface. No heavy scratches, digs, or gouges. Much gloss remains. Label starting to show a little more wear.
V+. Very Good: More small scratches and scuffs. A few more major scratches. Might have some of the original gloss remaining. More graying. Label shows a lot of wear, writing, scratches, etc. A common grade of popular, previously enjoyed 78s. Grade conditions above V+ should be considered above average.

V. Good: Well used. Might skip and may have greatly reduced sound output. Label may have been through a war. Might be legible on both sides.

V-. Fair: Original gloss all gone. Lots of scratches, scuffs, digs, and other assorted damage. Not much groove left. Might not play through.

P. Poor: Very little playing surface left. Might not track. Offered only if considered to be a rare find.
