~ 1968 ORIGINAL POPROCK MEETS FUZZY PSYCH~
BIZARRE MIXTURE FROM BOTH ENDS OF THE SPECTRUM
== THE OHIO EXPRESS ==
\ USA - Buddah Records - BDS 5018
...the psych nugget: "Turn to Straw" is amazing with headphones!
Original 1968 vinyl first pressing of surprisingly good garage LP; there's plenty of raw fuzz guitar and cool psych tracks buried in the gems along both sides...
....The "OHIO EXPRESS" album is particularly interesting. The album features just two Levine/Super K - produced songs. The rest of the album is filled out with the band's own material which ranges from catchy garage poprock to freakout psychedelic space-rock = hearing is believing...noted a couple tracks as great as any of the 'big' ones collectors love...
On this LP, the sticky bubblegum hit "Yummy Yummy Yummy" meets acid-eater garage-psych. The smiling young men on the sleeve have nothing—and I mean nothing—to do with the bubblegum song here. They were an Ohio garage band who liked Cream and Jimi Hendrix. For Buddah Records and the Kasenetz-Katz production team, the group stood as little more than a paisley-clad front for anonymous hired hands playing songs written by Joey Levine (who also sang), Artie Resnick, and Kenny Laguna.
The band saw themselves as "serious" acid rockers, but their label just wanted catchy AM radio hits and a touring act. The label manufactures the hit singles while the actual band's true, trippy identity comes out through their album tracks.
Whenever you hear fuzzy guitars and lyrics like "Ten thousand harpsichords blowing in the wind /Multicolored magicness swirling in your head/ But you don't know where your mind has gone", that's the Ohio Express themselves. (Let's also note that the Ohio Express original, "She's Not Comin' Home", is charming Zombies-like pop and one of the better songs on the LP.)
In all actuality, the dumb pop and retarded psych go together like peanut butter and jelly. This album, the blazingly inessential thing that it is, is solid entertainment...
CONDITION: The cover is solid, the white area is snow white, no seam splits, looks tops, as it is M- with no bends, no writing and very collectible look!
