Description
This LP recording is rare and historic. Produced in 1962, in collaboration with the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), these are the actual voices of some of the now-famous Freedom Riders, many of whom had just been released from jail. During their stay in jail they sang many of these songs.
Here is an excerpt from the cover:
"Bob Shelton of the New York Times said in an article about the freedom songs (August 20, 1962) "Negro folk music, which has been singing of a promised land since the days of slavery, has become a vital force in fulfilling that promise in the South today." Shelton is quite correct and that "vital force" is captured in this historic recording. Many of those who are singing SIT-IN SONGS: SONGS OF THE FREEDOM RIDERS here had just come out of jail before the record was cut. They were still fired up with the "folk process" which makes an album like this possible. These kids are out to change the world and you can tell it by the way they sing. When they sing We Shall Overcome they aren't kidding. Listen to them and you can hear the sincerity in their voices."
Issued by DAUNTLESS Records (DS 4601), a division of Audio Fidelity Records in 1962 the vinyl and the sleeve are in near-perfect condition. I have never played it and it looks like it may have never been played.
I purchased this LP in 2000 and have kept it carefully protected since. At their request I loaned it to The Women's Museum in Dallas, TX (closed in 2011) for their Civil Rights exhibit which was created as part of the museum's grand opening in the fall of 2000. It was in their care from June 28, 2000 till December 1, 2002 when it was returned to me, intact. I have all documentation surrounding this for anyone who would want it.
A booklet with words was available to purchase from CORE but I do not have it.
