I am sure some of you will remember back to 2008/2009 when I sold off part of my extensive collection for charity – Cancer Research UK and Hope House Hospice.

I am now selling a further part of my extensive collection so please save me as a favourite seller again.

I have been collecting vinyl for nearly 50 years and have an extensive collection which I am again reducing. At the height of my collecting I had well in excess of 50 Led Zeppelin red/plum vinyls.

This LP should be acceptable to most collectors; I am not as articulate as a number of eBay sellers on the background, supposed rarity, etc and so will just give you the facts as you know what you’re looking for as otherwise you would not have clicked on this listing.

Led Zeppelin - In through the out door. An ultra-rare FULL set of 6 UK 1st press LPs with A-F picture covers and brown paper bag outer covers.

An ultra-rare FULL set of 6 UK 1st press LPs with A-F picture covers, thick card “magic paint” inner sleeves and brown paper bags. All 6 vinyls have the rarest amended/corrected matrices only found on a UK 1st press which include the A5/B5 matrix (corrected from B4) and “Strawberry” etch. There are a number of features which collectors should be aware of when looking for a UK 1st press, as I will detail in this listing.

A full set of this LP is ultra-rare and very rarely comes up for sale. I was an avid collector and had 175 Led Zeppelin LPs (including over 50 Red/Plum UK 1st pressings), I was fortunate enough to have collected 3 full sets whilst collecting vinyl back in the 1970's and this is the last to go on sale having sold one about 9/10 years ago. Collectors need to be careful when purchasing a full set of the UK 1st album to ensure that the vinyl, inner sleeve with “magic paint”, outer picture cover (A-F) and brown paper bag outer are all UK as often attempts are made to include non UK 1st press originals.

Those printed in Europe and the US had a different spine text, also the texture and text printed on the brown bag were different. Collectors can purchase sets issued in USA or Europe; there are a number of differences between these different issues, in Europe the bottom inch of the spine says “stereo” and not the catalogue number also the bags have the later pressing plain brown paper whereas the UK 1st pressings have lines running through the paper either vertical or horizontal. In addition the Swan Song logo and credit on the brown paper bag was different as was the credit on the inner sleeve, labels were of course also different and did not have SSK 59410 on them or “Manufactured in the UK” noted.

The original 1979 album had an outer sleeve which was made to look like a plain brown paper bag. Each cover showed an alternate angle of a man in a bar. The scenario has been photographed from 6 different viewpoints within the bar and then 6 different sleeve variations have been created (with the letters A - F at the top of the spine denoting each variation). The inner sleeve features a “magic paint” in different pastel colours which appear on the design when gently wetting. Handling can cause the “magic paint” to materialise through perspiration on fingers. As the outer brown paper bag was sealed and then housed in shrinkwrap the buyer did not know which version of A-F they had bought until taken home and opened. Collecting a full set was therefore extremely difficult and costly/time consuming. So often the brown paper bags were torn on opening and discarded as they were thought to be no more than outer wrapping; very much like the black cellophane on Pink Floyd - Wish you were here.

Features of a genuine UK 1st press are:

1.    All the vinyls should have “Manufactured in the UK” on the labels. In the run off should be a “Strawberry” etching and the matrices A5/B5 with the B4 original matrix crossed out and replaced with the B5. This matrix is the VERY FIRST UK matrix, there were no earlier ones (this was common in the late 70s and A1/B1 etc was not used). It was mastered at Strawberry Mastering.

2.       The inner sleeve was originally creamy/white in colour and had a centre picture panel on each side which when moistened with a damp finger would colour up various pastel colours, indeed you only had to breathe on the “magic paint” and the moisture would activate it. When word spread about this “magic paint” so many people tried it and so the original non-coloured inner became coloured in, I must admit I did try this on a number of my copies when I first bought them and so whilst the inners with this set have “magic paint” inactivated I am including a “magic paint” activated one for collectors to keep alongside the 6 others. The inner sleeve should detail “Printed and made in England” later foreign copies did not have this.

3.       The outer brown paper bags have the correct UK catalogue number of SSK 59410 and “© 1979 a Swan Song recording distributed by WEA Records Limited, foreign copies did not have this. In addition UK 1st pressing brown paper bags have distinctive lines in the paper whereas foreign ones and later UK pressings do not.

4.       The picture covers (A-F) have the © 1979 a Swan Song recording on centre of the spine and the letter (A-F) on the top inch, with SSK 59410 on the bottom inch (European copies have “stereo” instead and have SS59410 not SSK 59410, USA copies have SS16002). The outer picture sleeve was designed by Hipgnosis

ALL 6 vinyls are in superb condition. I have stored the vinyls in poly-lined sleeves to protect both the vinyl and the card type inner sleeves. I am going to grade all EX+ all opened vinyl has sleeve withdrawal wispy lines and this is fully expected especially when there is a hard card inner sleeve as here; with this particular LP of mine many copies were unplayed as another identical copy was available.

All 12 labels are in great condition and show little or no evidence of spindle marks; in fact I have really struggled to find more than 2-3 light spindle traces on all 12 labels. I am going to grade all EX+

All 6 inner sleeves are “magic paint” inactivated. There are no silts or rips and no writing on them. I have stored the vinyls in poly-lined sleeves to protect both the vinyl and these card type inner sleeves. I am going to grade all VG++/EX only because you will always have some handling discolouration and foxing even if it is minimal, as this inner suffered from storage brown spot foxing to some extent and was very prone to discoluration. All “magic paint” inners are stored in resealable polythene covers to protect the surface from activation. The 7th additional activated inner sleeve is provided to show the “magic paint” activation and is ungraded. Finding inactivated inner sleeves is extremely difficult.

All 6 brown paper bags are in VG++/EX condition with no writing or sticker residue, now it must be borne in mind that the top opening edge will be slightly different on all opened copies as it depended how they were opened and indeed which printer had made them; the bags may have a slightly different appearance at the opening edge which was the result of opening the bags for the first time and no two will be the same. It should be borne in mind that these are flimsy paper bags which would have been stacked in the manufacturers, distributors and record shops prior to initial sale and whilst they are in collectable condition the opening edges may show absolute minimal fraying from when they were originally opened and subsequent storage over 49 years. These bags came in cellophane which shrinks and there is some shrinkage creasing in some of the bags, this is to be fully expected. The grading of these bags is always going to be difficult and should be graded based upon condition and the original material used. I am going to grade all as VG++/EX overall based upon my extensive knowledge of the LP and others I own and have seen elsewhere. Please note because of the construction and size of the brown paper bag (it overlaps the outer cover) it is therefore prone to fraying. I will pack thoroughly during transit.

All 6 picture covers (A-F) range in condition and are individually graded below. The matt covers are highly prone to wear and finding one without any creasing is extremely difficult, the spines fully readable and there is the light evidence of wear on the covers such as small corner bumps and some creasing. This LP was of course wrapped in cellophane when new and surface creases are to be expected as the cellophane shrinks; I have not seen a cover without some stress creasing on the front and rear edges. I would grade all 6 outer picture covers as set as VG++/EX overall; this sepia brown cover was highly prone to creasing due the cellophane shrinkwrap and brown paper bag putting strain on the cover and of course the colour does show up the usual stress creasing.

Picture cover A: One of the best covers I have seen with absolute minimal stress creasing, just a couple on the rear cover edges with minor spine end dink. Front cover is really lovely with just a tiny dink to opening edge in the upper quarter. Spine text fully readable with minimal corner tipping. Graded EX+

Picture cover B: Rear of cover is really lovely with just the merest hint of the usual stress creasing on the bottom edge. The front cover has some stress creasing in the bottom and top quarters on the spine ends. Spine text fully readable with minimal corner tipping. Graded EX

Picture cover C: Rear cover has just a couple of the usual stress creases on the rear cover edges top, bottom and spine end. The front cover has a couple of the usual stress creases to top edge with an area of more prominent creasing in the bottom right hand quarter which is seen when angled to the light. There is a rubbing slit (NOT all the way through) on the top edge. . Spine text fully readable with minimal corner tipping. Graded VG/VG+

Picture cover D: Rear cover has some of the usual stress creasing along the top edge with fine storage indentation line (9cm) seen when angled to the light. The front cover has the usual stress cresting in a couple of places on the top edge with a mils bend in the corner area and some light disc impression. Spine text fully readable with minimal corner tipping. Graded VG/VG+

Picture cover E: Rear cover a 1 usual stress crease to the top edge and a fine crease top left hand quarter seen when angled to the light. The front cover has a couple of storage indentation lines near the central spine area seen when angled to the light other than these a really lovely front. Spine text fully readable with minimal corner tipping. Graded VG/VG+

Picture cover F: Rear cover has 3 of the usual stress creases on the top and bottom edges with 1 on the spine end. The front has 4 of the usual stress creases on the top edge with the same on the bottom edge and 3 on the spine end. There is corner dink bottom left. Spine text fully readable with minimal corner tipping. Graded VG+/EX-

Matrix Nos on all 6 vinyls: Side 1 SSK 59410 - A/5 with STRAWBERRY etch and Side 2: SSK 59410 - B/5 (with the B4 original matrix crossed out and replaced with the B5) with STRAWBERRY etch

Surface Marks = Superficial,usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. These often occur when sliding vinyl in and out of a paper or cardboard inner sleeve.

Scratch= a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not. Any clicks etc caused by scratches will be noted in listing description.

Original= a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does not necessarily mean the very first batch pressed. An example is Led Zeppelin IV red/plum label which had numerous label variations in its “original” format. It is up to the buyer to satisfy themselves as to original or re-issue and which variation of original label it is; I will state what I believe to be true.

First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine first pressed record. I do not claim to be a leading authority, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to fully understand all the variants and different pressing plants used; the information is there for the potential bidder to decide. I understand that some records were pressed in batches of 300 per stamper, different pressing plants were often used to cope with demand and so variances do occur.

Surface Sound = Mild,light sound, usually light crackle or similar often caused by dust particles or worn stylus within the grooves.

Foxing=Discolouration often light brown spots on the label or cover.

Feathering= Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than anon-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Since the LP has been in my possession the vinyl has always been kept separately from the outer cover to mitigate this.

Ringwear= vinyl impression on the inner and/or outer cover. Since the LP has been in my possession the vinyl has always been kept separately from the inner/outer cover to mitigate this unless sealed.

Spindle traces or spiders = these are seen on the label with darker coloured labels such as Creation or Track being the most prone to this. Numerous spindle traces could suggest poor handling when placing on turntable.

Original inner sleeve = supplied with the record and clearly identified as such e.g. record released in April 1970 with a 0470inner sleeve,  108for October 1968 or company sleeve such as Decca. I will state in the listing description if the original inner sleeve is present and will only include one if it was part of the original packaging.

Important information - please read before bidding/buying

General condition of vinyl and cover

I try, tothe best of my ability, to describe as accurately and as honesty as I can allitems I offer for sale with all the relevant information I can think of to helpany potential bidder and collector (as I am myself with over 50 Led Zeppelinred/plum copies). I will mention any defects or flaws no matter how small thatI notice to be fair as possible to any interested collector.

Vinyl

You canassume that there are no warps on the vinyl I sell; whilst no record sitsperfectly flat on a turntable you can assume there will be no discernible ormaterial warping. You can also assume no vinyl will stick or jump.

Thelabels will be graffiti and sticker free and not torn, you can expect spindlespider tracing on the labels, some such as Creation blue labels are more proneto this, as are Track black labels. I will point out any significant issues inthe listing. Any promo sticker on the label will be an original and thereforeignored for the purposes this paragraph.

The vinylI will be selling is 40/50 years old and will have been played to some extent. Despitewhat you may see described elsewhere I do not believe you can tell how manytimes a vinyl has been played and so you have to assume it will have beenplayed often as it was bought for that purpose.

Vinylwill have some background or surface noise, as the BBC DJ John Peel famouslysaid "Somebody was trying to tell methat CDs are better than vinyl because they don't have any surface noise. Isaid, 'Listen, mate, life has surface noise." I deep cleanall vinyl on a professional Project II vacuum type record cleaning machine withProject proprietary cleaner to make the vinyl the best it can be, as the audioperformance will deteriorate by exposure over time and will obviously bereturned closer to the original sound by using this method. Many I offer forsale have had little use although there can be dust in the grooves, even whenalmost new; this is the original authentic sound John Peel recognised and evencleaning with a machine may still leave some background surface noise. I amaware that cleaning can be a controversial subject with vinyl collectors, audiopurists and enthusiasts so I use Project proprietary solution which shouldsatisfy most collectors.

In myexperience there is always an element of surface or background sound with audioreproduction on vinyl, even when new. Almost all used vinyl has at least lightsurface marks which are always visible when viewed under a bright light andoccur predominately when paper inner sleeves or cardboard picture sleeves (suchas Led Zeppelin Physical Graffiti) are present - So if you are uncomfortablewith a bit of light crackling it’s probably best not to buy vinyl as John Peelwould say. In my opinion the light surface sound is more than compensated for bythe clarity and ‘reality’ of the overall sound reproduction.

I willnot photograph the runoff dead wax to show matrix numbers as these will beclearly stated in the listing description along with stampers and inscriptionssuch as the cutting work of the legendary George Peckham on Led Zeppelin andDeep Purple LPs – Porky/Pecko etc.

When Imention age in my listings it is not an excuse for poor condition but as matterof fact. I do not regard condition as age related, it is primarily dependent oncare over its life, and if you ever see an LP described as ‘good for its age’ Irecommend you avoid it because more often than not it’s an excuse for somethingthat has not been carefully used.

I do notprovide a full track listing as buyers are generally aware of the LP they arelooking for and what tracks are on the LP. If any buyer wants a track listing Iwill supply it, an alternative is to search via Discogs. The photographs willshow the label for each side of the vinyl which should enable buyers to see thetracks included.

Whilst Ihave owned the LP the vinyl has been stored separately from the outer cover asdetailed in the final photograph in the listing, which details part of myextensive collection. I store the vinyl in new poly-lined inner sleeves andthen they are placed in white cardboard outer sleeves; your purchases will besent to you in this format, see listing photographs

Covers

If thevinyl I will be selling is 40/50 years old then the covers will have beenstored for that length of time either in plastic outer covers or not, none arevault sealed copies. The covers may well have moved home several times with theoriginal and subsequent owners.

You canassume there will be no writing or graffiti on the covers unless I mention it,any sticker removal marks will be mentioned in the listing.

Whilst Ihave owned the LP the vinyl has been stored separately from the outer cover asdetailed in the final photograph of the listing, which details part-of myextensive collection.

My coversare stored in re-sealable poly bags to mitigate ringwear, your purchases willbe sent to you in this format, see listing photograph.

I willsend any original inner sleeve with the LP on the basis that it is not ageneric paper sleeve bought later. I will state in the listing if there is anoriginal inner sleeve included. Expect ringwear and creases with any originalinner sleeve.

Grading

I havedescribed this record strictly according to The Record Collector RRPG gradingsystem with my own interpretation included for near mint (NM) LPs, so therewill be no nasty surprises for the winning bidder or buyer. This LP has beencarefully graded as it is not in my interests to over grade; see my feedbackwhich bears testimony to my approach to grading and buyers viewpoint on it.

Mint (M) the-recorditself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration insound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, bookletor poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as sealed or unplayedshould be mint. I will not sell any LPs with this grade as I cannot guaranteethat they have never been played.

Near Mint (NM) therecord shows some signs of having been played, but there is virtually nolessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have minimal wearand/or creasing. Some cover designs (such as the original Rolling Stones StickyFingers with zip covers) caused damage to other LPs when stacked in recordshops and so once handled even unsealed unplayed mint records and covers canhave wear. I have used this grading in my previous listings even with the NM+grade and buyers were more than happy with my grading.

Excellent (EX) therecord shows some signs of having been played, but there is very littlelessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wearand/or creasing.

Very good (VG) therecord has obviously been played many times, but displays no majordeterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and theoccasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items,without any major defects, is acceptable.

Good (G) therecord has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeablydeteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover andcontents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration,etc.

I willnot list LPs that are in Fair or Poor condition irrespective of rarity.

The use of plus(+) or minus (-) allows for items that fall between theabove grades.

Photographs

Pleasenote that I am not a professional photographer and in some of the photographsin my listings you may see slight shadowing or darker patches and colourinconsistencies together with reflections in the runoff deadwax, this is due tomy inability with a camera and not due to deficiencies in the vinyl/cover.

I do notuse photographs to enhance albums; they are included as an aid to bidders and Itry to highlight any flaws or blemishes – not to bleach out, obscure or avoidthem as it will not miraculously transform into a mint vinyl and cover intransit when was not in the first place.

Allphotographs contained within this listing show the actual item (s) offered-they are not catalogue, archive or library photographs. Packing of vinyl

I sendout in pizza box style packaging with a minimum of 2 cardboard stiffeners andbubblewrap. I have sent out vinyl across the world without any reports ofdefects in packaging, my feedback bears testimony to how I pack my vinyl. I DONOT use mailing envelopes even for lower value vinyl as they are not fit forpurpose.

Allvinyl, irrespective of value, is sent in a new poly lined inner. This is thenplaced in a white cardboard sleeve for transit.

All vinylhoused in the poly-lined sleeve is not sent in the original outer cover toprevent “knifing” of the outer cover in transit. The white cardboard sleevewill help protect the vinyl in transit.

I willpack specifically to buyer’s requirements if advised prior to shipping, if Icannot do so for whatever reason then I will notify buyer who then has theoption to withdraw from the transaction. 

Postage

In order to comply with eBay rules the buyer must receive the itempurchased and so the buyer will be responsible to pay appropriate fully insuredand signed for postage as follows:

If the LP is returned due to failure of the buyer topay the appropriate import taxes/duties and other related charges then if theLP is to be re-posted a further postage charge will be made which the buyermust pay before it is re-posted.

I onlyaccept PayPal in £ Sterling (GBP). I do not accept PayPal Echeques.

Pleasewait for an invoice before paying as this may need to be adjusted to reflectfully insured postage based upon the final sales value.

Latepayers, non-payers and ‘0’ feedback bidders or if the bidder’s feedback is ofsuch limited quantity that it cannot be regarded as reliable and/or thebidder’s feedback is of dubious quality and/or gives the me any indication orreason to doubt the credibility of the bid they will be blocked or bidscancelled at my discretion, “0” or negative feedback bidders should contact mevia eBay message system before bidding if they want to bid on any of mylistings.

Ifpayment is not received within the expected 14 days of the original purchase Iwill issue a non-paying bidder alert and if payment is not received, at mydiscretion thereafter, I will re-list the item.

Returns Policy

If anywinning bidder is not satisfied with their purchase I will offer a completerefund. I will not refund if any defect detail is clearly stated in the listingdescription and subsequently missed by the buyer, so read the item descriptioncarefully. If any potential buyer does not understand anything in my listing,please use eBay message system and ask me to help.

Althoughit is extremely rare, there can be a difference between my descriptions, andopinions, and an individual buyer’s expectations so I have clearly statedReturns Policy for added reassurance which is detailed here and in all mylistings. In the unlikely event that you want to use this facility pleasecontact me to agree the procedure. There really will never be a reason to haveany problem with an item you purchase from me. Before bidding please read thelisting carefully as it is there to inform bidders and prevent anymisunderstandings.

If it’smy fault and I have made a genuine mistake when compiling the listing then Ioffer a return on a fully refunded basis i.e. to include return postage. On myprevious sales this has only happened once with a buyer who had purchased anumber of LPs and I ask that this generous offer is not abused or it may bewithdrawn.

The buyerwill need to ensure that the returned LP is in the same condition and theactual one sent to them together with all other items detailed in the listing.The buyer will need to ensure that they take steps to protect themselves forloss in transit with adequate packaging as this is beyond my control.

Feedback

I leavefeedback for buyers after they inform me that they have received the item(s)and have left me their feedback. As I have a clearly stated Returns Policy,which does not expose the buyer to any direct loss whatsoever, I see no reasonfor either side to indulge in negative feedback. Providing the buyer does notengage in threats, abuse or use of negative feedback I will resolve any problemin a fair and reasonable way. If you have a problem or complaint about anytransaction you have made with me contact me via eBay message system and wewill find a solution that is mutually acceptable.
