Levan's treatment of these outstanding singles showcases his deft ability behind the decks, shifted tempos, filtered rhythm sections, additional vocals, percussion, and effects all sculpt the original tracks in service of the dance floor.
Club mainstays like Loleatta Holloway's "The Greatest Performance of My Life" evolve from tight, radio-ready hits into propulsive, percussive grooves under Levan's skillful hand. The deep, bass-heavy sound evident on these recordings was honed to perfection over the years of Levan's residency at Paradise Garage: New York's legendary dance club. The Garage's devotion to dance, endless parties, and its diverse, discerning audience demanded curatorial excellence from its DJ. Levan's taste, reputation, and vibrant presence were integral to making the Garage one of the most musically and politically progressive dance clubs of all time. Paradise Garage closed its doors in 1987 but one can still experience the groove-inducing joy of a Larry Levan set with these masterful remixes.
