It’s easier to compare things to one another. To relate them. To lean on simile to describe something new we come across. And that’s not a bad thing, we’re interfacing creatures. We have a special way of using the world around us to make sense of that same world. Of connecting and pattern-making. Of spinning our webs in the cracks and corners in hopes of catching our meaning/purpose/Grand Unifying Theory/whatever unaware and ready to eat. What can we say, we want a digestible truth.
In that way, it might be easy to say something like “Låpsley sounds like Adele”, and you might read that somewhere on the Internet in the next month or two. I don’t think it gets at who Låpsley is as an artist, though, and what this album has in store for you. There’s a hurt here that’s as simple and thick as thunder, and an accompanying wisdom that’s as wintry as it is beyond her years. There’s a clarity here. The kind that only comes after sitting with what you’re trying to say until you’re able to say it. In that way, it’s in line with Assisi’s admonition to use words only if necessary. It feels necessary here, and after a few listens I think you’ll see why.
Don’t be surprised if this album soaks in slowly and becomes a favorite of yours going forward. It fits in so many different situations, and has so much comfort to give, that it belongs as a fixture in your stack of regularly played records. 2016 is looking to be another big year for new releases, and Long Way Home is at the head of the line as one of our favorites.
