Description
This is the long out-of-print original 5-LP release of La Monte Young’s masterwork, The Well-Tuned Piano, recorded in the fall of 1981 on Gramavision Records. This five-plus hour composition, in Young’s own just intonation tuning system, is a seminal work of minimalism.
While well-known as one of the early founders of minimalist music along with Terry Riley, Steve Reich, and Philip Glass, comparatively little of Young’s music has been commercially released, and most of those recordings are currently out of print.
The package includes a 28-page booklet including many photographs, notes, and essays about Young’s music and life, as well as an annotated list of themes with the timings as they appear in the performance. The essays and notes are by Young, Terry Riley, Marian Zazeela, Daniel Wolf, and David Farneth.
The five direct metal master (DMM) LPs are in near-mint condition, and have only been played once. I have not recently played through this recording to check audio, but all five discs have excellent glossy surfaces. The booklet is mint. The box is very good plus—there is some slight shelf wear on the corners. Along the bottom edge of the box, the paper covering the cardboard has an inch-long tear which does not go through the cardboard itself. The box is very tight and structurally sound.
