"Paradise Theatre," released in 1981, is a concept album by the American rock band Styx. It serves as a fictionalized account of Chicago's Paradise Theatre, from its grand opening in 1928 through its decline and eventual demolition in 1958. This narrative is used as a metaphor for the changing times in America from the late 1970s into the early 1980s, touching on themes of hope, renewal, and the challenges facing the nation.
The album weaves together hard rock anthems, theatrical ballads, and shorter, narrative-driven pieces to tell its story. It features several hit singles, including the optimistic ballad "The Best of Times" and the rockers "Too Much Time on My Hands" and "Rockin' the Paradise." Other notable tracks include "Nothing Ever Goes as Planned," "Lonely People," and the darker, "Snowblind." The album opens and closes with short pieces titled "A.D. 1928" and "A.D. 1958," which share a core melody, musically framing the rise and fall of the Paradise Theatre and, by extension, the American spirit.
