At the time of release, Jagger said, "I really feel close to this album, and I really put all I had into it... so I guess it comes across that I'm more into these songs. It wasn't as vague as the last album (Exile On Main St.) which kind of went on so long that I didn't like some of the things. There's more thought to this one. It was recorded all over the place over about two or three months. The tracks are much more varied than the last one. I didn't want it to be just a bunch of rock songs."

Preceded by "Angie" as the lead single, which sailed to #1 in the United States and became a worldwide hit, Goats Head Soup was released in late August 1973 and also shot to #1 worldwide. Critical reaction to the album was varied at the time. Bud Scoppa called the album "one of the year's richest musical experiences" in Rolling Stone magazine, while others drifted away from it though now overall the album is now generally considered to have marked the end of the Stones' "golden age".

Recording began as early as 1970. Two tracks, "Silver Train" and "Hide Your Love", resulted from these early sessions and re-appeared in November 1972 when the band relocated to Kingston, Jamaica's Dynamic Sound Studios. Guitarist Keith Richards said in 2002, "Jamaica was one of the few places that would let us all in! By that time about the only country that I was allowed to exist in was Switzerland, which was damn boring for me, at least for the first year, because I didn't like to ski... Nine countries kicked me out, thank you very much….” (onya Keef !!)

REVIEW

"Coming Down Again" is reflective of that downbeat and jaded quality of the music which creates a half-hearted atmosphere in parts. Still, whilst Goats Head Soup has suffered the backlash for being less than perfect, the trick to its appreciation is to divorce the album from its surroundings.

The album brims with sophisticated polish but lacks the passionate grit we've come to expect. Instead there is a decadent, druggy feel entirely reflective of the band's state of mind. The opener "Dancing With Mr D" typifies this sense of detachment. It's a great song built upon one of The Stones' sleaziest riffs but dancing with the devil has become par for the course for the band and so it doesn't have the same impact – like watching a movie with a killer twist of an ending for the second time. More interesting is "Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)" and the introduction of a horn section. Not even close to being named a Stones' classic, the metallic tones work well with Jagger's voice. Equally memorable is "Star Star" but for completely different reasons. Nothing more than a run-of-the-mill rocker that Jagger and Richards could churn out in their sleep, it's notoriety comes from its intended title "Star Fu**er" about a renowned groupie.

Goats Head Soup stands on the quality of its ballads....the aforementioned "Coming Down Again" is tender in its simplicity while "Angie" is a timeless classic....however it's the overlooked "Winter" with an understated vocal performance by Jagger which steals the show.
