THE ROLLING STONES
Between The Buttons
1967 1st Australian issue
DECCA label # SKLA 4852
CONDITION
VINYL : A terrific 150gram thick piece and plenty of sheen throughout / some light marks throughout however this deep-grooved gem still gives a fantastic crystal clear sound / no lead in-out hiss and no background noise / certainly no pops or skips either which is pleasing / clean labels / difficult to fault sound-wise / Rated a strong VG+ and will not disappoint.SLEEVE :
FRONT : laminated cover / no writing / a very minor nick at the top-left as per 1st photo above / some edge-wear along bottom and entrance side / the spine is intact / no writing or splits
BACK : minor ring-wear as expected / some nicks (3) along right-hand side as per 2nd photo above / no writing and still quite presentable
OVERALL : more than acceptable for this rarity and I believe you’d be doing very well to find better in my book as it presents far superior to the odd copy that does surface these days.
DESCRIPTION
Gee this is a lovely find !!....the 1967 1st Aussie stereo pressing (on the red Decca wide-band label) of this often overlooked masterpiece from the Stones.Notably a sideways step from their previous guitar-driven rock this charming piece catches the band at close to their creative peak …chock full of pop-psych gems featuring lots of piano and organs and harpsichord and harmonica …a terrific precursor to the next “magic 3” in Satanic Majesties ; Beggars Banquet and Let It Bleed …the Stones truly owned the next decade …
‘Between the Buttons’ would prove to be the last album produced by Andrew Loog Oldham, with whom The Rolling Stones would have a creative falling-out in mid-1967. Indeed, Oldham's influence is more evident here than on earlier albums, as he employs Phil Spector-like layering on "Yesterday's Papers", "My Obsession", and "Complicated" and uncredited background vocalists (including, possibly, Graham Nash) throughout. Brian Jones continues his experiments in exotic instruments on this album, (playing organ, marimba, harmonica, recorder, piano, and electric dulcimer). Keith Richards busies himself with distinctive guitar work on "My Obsession", "Connection", "All Sold Out", "Please Go Home" and "Miss Amanda Jones".
In the years following its release, “Between the Buttons” somehow became overlooked. Today, however, many critics and fans have come to appreciate the album's eclectic qualities and a wealth of obscure gems, making it a unique album in The Rolling Stones' released catalogue, one that more or less abandoned the Stones' blues-based style and featured more consistent songwriting than their previous efforts.
In 2003, the album was ranked number 355 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
