CONDITION

VINYL :
SIDE A : Unlike the glossy B-Side this has a hazy, milky like appearance which sometimes occurs. Although not as pleasing to the eye blemishes such as this don’t effect the sound quality / having said that there is some lead in-out hiss here and one minor skip early on in Track One / some background noise here and there along with some light marks generating the odd minor ‘pop’ ( moreso the lead-in of Track 2 and quieter parts elsewhere ) however it still plays through great but certainly not as clean a sound as Side-B . Rated a VG+ easily just the same.
SIDE B : Terrific / shiny throughout / the odd light surface mark though very minor / No Skips / the odd light and faint pop but barely worth mentioning / little background noise to speak of / no overly annoying lead in-out hiss / fantastic clear sound / tracks through superbly and certainly worth an EX rating
OVERALL : tiny name penned in from previous owner on B-Side label however barely noticeable, A-Side label is clean / nice thick piece of vinyl / a near impossible to find 1st pressing and if I’m raving about the music in the script below it is because this is one great album !!

DESCRIPTION

In early 1969 (post other bands Yama and Id) and following a failed operation which now saw him permanently wheelchair-bound, Jeff St John’s new band Copperwine appeared on Sydney’s fast-developing 'head' scene. Around the time of the new band's formation, guitarist Ross East was also invited to join the revised Masters Apprentices line-up by Jim Keays, but he turned it down, opting to stay with Jeff.
Aided by East and Peter Figures, plus Alan Ingram on bass and keyboardist Barry Kelly (from Marty Rhone's Soul Agents), St John wowed the crowds at the Ourimbah "Pilgrimage For Pop", Australia's first major outdoor rock festival, in January 1970. The band's dynamic repertoire mixed quality prog-flavoured group originals with powerful renditions of Sly & the Family Stone's funk classic "Sing A Simple Song", a storming version of The Temptations' psych-soul masterpiece "Cloud Nine" and Blind Faith's "Can't Find My Way Home." Captured superbly by producer Pat Aulton this album remains one of the most accomplished and musically adventurous efforts of the time.

Despite winning considerable critical acclaim “Joint Effort” failed to generate significant sales with a fickle public who initially had yet to be turned-on sufficiently to grab this masterpiece with both hands and run. In time that changed and demand for this album has deservedly far outweighed many other classic / collectable efforts from this era.
Led by of the best rock vocalists this country has ever produced combined with the outstanding musicianship within the band (particularly that of East and Kelly) illustrated the embarrassment of riches scattered among Australian groups at this time. They also contributed classic self-penned numbers here in the reflective "Fanciful Flights" the jazz-tinged instrumental "Any Orange Night" and the ensemble piece "You Don't Have To Listen". The towering opening track, a surging, organ-driven cover of The Temptation's "Cloud Nine", showed off Jeff's commanding soul stylings, superbly backed by a power-drive performance from Copperwine and is an absolute standout.

Personally I also rate their psych cover of The Four Tops “Reach Out” a little ripper in the same vein as Gene Pierson’s amazing version however the real sleeper here in my book is the killer “I Remember” …an awesome psych gem … in fact the whole 2nd side is pure magic kicking off with the psych-tinged “Days To Come” followed by another 5 tracks of psych-drenched prog rock…amazing stuff !!

Billy Thorpe fans would be interested in his terrific contribution on harmonica here, his rare solos on the funky / prog effort “You Don’t Have To listen” and “I Been Treated Wrong” are particularly noteworthy.

A great pick-up in this condition.
