Help's 2nd album is Probably one of the most interesting discoveries of early '70s American rock. It's heavily riff and groove based with wah pedal laced throughout. What has dismayed me is the "progressive" label; while there are psychedelic elements, specifically in the opening song, it's just a good hard rock trio in the vein of the James Gang or Budgie.
What sets Help's Second Coming apart, though, is the strong musicianship Displayed by the three. The bass is heard Actually, the drumming keeps the beat while the guitarist wails out solos. Very energetic, as has been Described by other reviewers. The songs are slightly commercial, and not all of them are original did; "Good Time Music", while having an enjoyable melody, is a token early '70s boogie tune, while "Power" has the populist overtones of Grand Funk Railroad. But the album had the capability, with a little bit of polishing, to have catapulted them to be as big as GFR. For the '70s underground enthusiast, This should be a starting place. It just deserves so much more recognition, it really is a classic. (Chrismeulbroek / rateyourmusic.com)
