I tend to think that the most interesting Impulse releases are between catalogue number 9100 and 9250 - the late Bob Thiele and the early Ed Michel albums, the time when the label became both more pop-oriented, at the same time dived much deeper into avant garde jazz and began to explore (it was 1967 after all) psychedelic music as well. It is the period when the Impulse discography has the greatest density of weirdness.
Bill Plummer and The Cosmic Brotherhood is a perfect embodiment of these divergent directions: "Journey to the East" is a bona fide pop song in the Gabor Szabo tradition, but with a freaked-out sitar solo in the middle; "Parsa Fortuna" is straight jazz with great sax work by Tom Scott and Plummer helping out on bass; "The Look of Love" is an easy listening arrangement of the Burt Bacharach song for jazz combo, sitar and harpsichord. On side two, "Arc 294" is a ten-minute free jazz improvisation for an ensemble consisting of three sitars, sarod, tabla, tambura, and bells, while "Lady Friend" is a somewhat disjointed version of the Byrds song.
Overall, it's first and foremost one thing - pretty crazy, about as crazy as the cover photograph of Plummer in a black suit and tie standing next to these wooden statues (or, on the back cover, sitting barefoot in some garden with his sitar, still wearing the black suit and tie).
It's an attempt to fuse west coast jazz, easy listening, Indian classical music, free jazz and psychedelic pop, and yes, it is that weird. Oddly, it works to some extent, at least if you are willing to see it as a product of its time. If anything, it's a fairly unique item in the Impulse discography. (hprill/rateyourmusic.com)
