Label/Format: Elektra – original orange and black format with matt textured surfaces.

Label Conditions: Two attractive labels being clean and fresh with no writing. Spindle marks are around moderate or less, fine and quite faint. The record itself does have a few marks but overall plays well with any audio blemishes mostly light, relatively few and infrequent. I found it enjoyable, if not, I would not offer it – but not one for the more discerning purists who only want near perfection at any cost.

Rarity: Rare as a very first UK issue, and the first stereos even more so. But to be clear: this record is very good with a few minor ticks and a little crackle here and there, it mostly plays well, and without any serious issues and no tracking problems. Still a nice original that many will be happy with, a record getting harder and harder to find in any condition.

Brief Info: Within the history of popular music, I can think of few more beautiful albums than ‘Forever Changes’. Prior to this the band had issued a very impressive self-titled debut album, and a slightly more patchy second, ‘De Capo’, and then this third, an album of such stunning brilliance, it’s status as a ‘Masterpiece’ is rarely disputed. Beautiful song structures with lush orchestration and meaningful lyrics – a timeless piece of work that refuses to age. Arthur Lee was truly inspired here, and all bar two songs were written by him. It took the music critics by storm, but incredibly, failed to sell well in their native US, but did fairly well here in the UK, even with the nation gripped by ‘Sgt Pepper’. High in my personal list of all-time-greats, I never tire or fail to be moved by the sublime songs and lyrics – this man and band never could live up to this masterwork again and this album alone will mean most music lovers and collectors will know the band ‘Love’. This scarce stereo original is in fine condition, but with gentle hints of age and minor reminders of. As stated nothing remotely serious. Let’s honest – a near mint copy of this record usually commands large prices, and not all collectors can, or choose to shell-out vast sums. As long as the item is correctly described and graded, there is always the right person for the right copy. This is a very solid and for many enjoyable very good example (arguably better being honest).

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): a fully laminated single cover that was printed and made in England by Polydor Records Ltd. This a dedicated stereo number cover, includes the white inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: One of the definitive cover fronts of the entire 1960s – as famous as the wonderful record inside. The laminate both sides retains fine shine and clarity, only under angled light is a little minor dulling seen. There is a lift on the back spine edge, but not too big, and this is a cover that seldom seems to avoid this, often present from new. A little edge and corner area creasing with is fairly light and fine, and hardly away from the sides. The graphic area still nicely white, the pictures with deep unfaded colour. Most of any few marks are light and faint as well, there is a little corner tip rubbing. The end panel card on the back top edge has thickened. Overall a fine example of a cover fast approaching fifty.

Top Edge: Largely straight, a little less so near the right corner area. The fold hardly worn, the card end has thickened as stated, this is because it is a little proud of the fold in manufacture.

Bottom Edge: Quite straight with a few marks that appear under the fully laminated edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and still mostly sharp with very little wear or thickening. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. The laminate ends still easily seen, the fine exposed white strips with minimal traces of toning (being critical).

Spine and Text: Still solid, thin and possibly a little compressed. Fully laminated with minimal ageing, all the text fully present as seen.

Corners: A little rubbing and gentle tip creasing with mostly fine shape retained. No evidence of bashing, any dinks light.

Cover Summary: Quite a thin and fragile cover, difficult to find in absolute top grade condition as an original. This overall is a very fine example with no serious issues as seen. It should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD(+): a plain white unlined inner that has aged a little with the usual seam adhesive area darkening. Both window circles crisp and neat with no damage. A little creasing, all edges unsplit with no repairs. This has the text ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’ and ‘MADE IN ENGLAND’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: VERY GOOD: arguably better. I seldom offer records below excellent, but these elusive vintage rarer classics are getting harder and harder to find in any condition – and this is still a very fine example. Yes a few marks, mostly surface types and largely without sound. But a few sporadic, mostly gently ticks or minor surface sound here and there. So a more average example I suppose, but still an enjoyable listen with a few polite reminders of what is being listened to – I personally have few qualms with that. If this record did not still please me (and those who know me well, think I am very fussy), I would not offer it. A clean record with fine shine and solidly pressed. Most of the relatively few visible marks are fine and faint, with finer still hairlines seen under bright light. Being honest, I feel this copy has not been played many times, but maybe a little less carefully than some. Be clear: this is still a very nice original album with sound, focus and clarity still little short of fully intact throughout. Not for purists or the highly discerning, but a nice example and perfect for those who can tolerate a few minor blemishes and not wanting to spent vaster sums on a pristine example (if indeed you can even find one).

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: The beauty of the music is never in doubt, and overall, this copy still delivers enjoyable sound. The music is still focused, all the details are intact and I found I still enjoyed the vast majority of this copy considerably. Any gentle surface sound little and light with a few equally light sporadic ticks here-and-there. So the music content itself has barely degraded as such, but just enough to remind of what is being listened to – a well loved and enjoyed record fast approaching 50-years-old. No tracking issues* or ruinous clunks or loud clicks, but not a silent record as the grading reiterates. I know for certain some analogue fans have no qualms in light surface sound, and this record is for such listeners. But for those who want a record to play practically as quiet as the digital formats, well this not for them. Better copies do surface and are offered occasoinally, they will command considerable, often vast prices, so this could be a great compromise. You pay your money, you take your choice. This can be recommend to the right collectors – but not all – I cannot say fairer.

End Piece: An album of stunning beauty, totally unique and original – few for me compare to ‘Forever Changes’. Immensely daring and inspired, this ticks every box. I will reiterate again, this album is visually a little down on what I usually offer, but plays fine, and probably most towards the highest standard. Do NOT expect better, this has been carefully play-graded and described as I heard it.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
