LOVE "ELEKTRA MASTERS Original U.K. stereo LP featuring the L.A. Psychedelic legends w/a 16-track compilation of their greatest hits & non-LP singles. Featuring key tracks from their first 3 groundbreaking albums- "Love", "Da Capo" & "Forever Changes" plus the B-side to "7 & 7 Is", the previously un-compiled "Number Fourteen" & both sides of the 1968 non-LP single "Your Mind & We Belong Together"/"Laughing Stock". Elektra Records was primarily an independent Folk label but owner Jac Holzman saw the writing on the wall & wanted to branch out into the exploding Rock market with the advent of the Hippie movement coinciding with underground FM radio in the mid-1960s. On a scouting mission to L.A. in 1966, he saw Love at a small club on the Sunset Strip & immediately signed them to the label. Their live show was exciting & included some unusual song choices such as the Bacharach-David track "My Little Red Book" performed by Manfred Mann in the "What's New Pussycat" film & a frantic version of "Hey Joe" that had been popularized by the Byrds in addition to their top-notch original material. Visually they were interesting as well w/leader Arthur Lee & guitarist John Echols being African-American, blond & blue-eyed rhythm guitarist & sometime vocalist Bryan MacLean looking like he had just stepped out of the California surf & 3 other various L.A. Hippie-types on bass, keyboards & drums. "My Little Red Book" from the debut 1966 LP got some airplay & charted at a decent #52 on the Top 100. Another great track (later recorded by Kurt Cobain's Nirvana for MTV's "Unplugged") is "Signed D.C." -essentially a suicide note left by the heroin addicted original drummer Don Conka. The second album "Da Capo" featured their biggest hit- the manic Psychedelic classic "7 & 7 Is" which reached #33 & then came the 1968 masterpiece "Forever Changes" which is often mentioned alongside the Beatles "Sgt. Pepper" & the Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" as one of the best Rock albums of all time. The group expanded their sound to include strings, brass & Latin rhythms without losing any of the poignancy of Arthur Lee's surreal lyrics. Interestingly Bryan MacLean's "Alone Again Or" was chosen as the single but peaked at #99 after only 3 weeks on the charts. To my mind, the best track on the album is "A House Is Not A Motel" which sums up the mayhem in Lee's life & features some good fuzz guitar work from Echols. A fourth album "Four Sail" appeared on Elektra but Lee was the only constant from the first 3 classic albums. This 16 track compilation picks the best tracks from the those albums as well as bringing together the hard to find single material. The reputation of Love as one of the 1960s best & most influential bands has grown steadily over the years making this album, lovingly put together by Zig Zag's John Tobler, an essential addition to your collection (Elektra) K 32002 M-/M.

Cover is intact w/no writing or tears & still looks nearly new w/only very faint shelf wear . The record w/gray Elektra "butterfly" labels has no scratches or scuffs & has received very few plays. In great shape after 53 years!
