When asked to define “Jazz”, Miles Davis uttered only four words: “Louis Armstrong & Charlie Parker” – that’s what – to Miles, at least – Jazz was all about (in all his, um…modesty, he somehow failed to include himself. However, we have absolutely NO such inhibitions – we would promptly add four more words to his definition of Jazz: Miles, Coltrane, Rollins, and Monk (and, oh…Joe Henderson… Hank Mobley…Bill Evans…Cannonball Adderley…Charles Mingus…Bud Powell…and…and…and…)

Louis Armstrong, who (as we are proud to report) was our next-door neighbor, having spent his entire life here in Corona, Queens, NY) was a #1 name of XX Century American Music and quite possibly the founding father of modern jazz (although jazz purists consider him a traditionalist, make no mistake: there would never have been any Lee Morgans, Clark Terrys, Miles Davises or Donald Byrds had it not been for Louis Armstrong to break the new ground and chart uncharted waters first). 

Satchmo's late ‘60s MCA/ABC recordings are dime-a-dozen; his Kapp and Verve records are also relatively easy to find. His original 50's Columbia recordings are somewhat more rare. But finding a good DECCA album from the 1950's on the original BLACK label, and in good shape -- forget it. It's a sight unseen.  There is a good reason why these recordings are so rare: DECCA pressed all its mid-50’s albums on brittle, frail, polystyrene vinyl, which was incredibly susceptible to wear, tear, breakage and all manners of damage. To find one in an incredible – virtually unplayed – condition, is near-impossible.  Grab this beauty now, before someone else  does.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is STILL in its original inner, perforated plastic baggy, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(c)           The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(d)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2 (front side) and 3 (back side)

-        Back cover has some light yellowish stains, probably from exposure to humidity.

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
