Description

Outstanding and hard-to-find vintage jazz LP featuring LOU DONALDSON on the BLUE NOTE label, from 1955.  Title is “Wailing with Lou.”  Catalog number is BLP 1545.

Record is thick vinyl, with deep groove.  Label address is "BLUE NOTE RECORDS * 47 WEST 63rd * NEW YORK 23" on both sides.  (see label scan).  Has "RVG” hand-etched in trailoff vinyl, "ear" symbol on both sides.  Jacket has "For Complete Catalog Write to BLUE NOTE RECORDS, 47 West 63rd St., New York 23." on reverse at bottom.

Personnel consist of the following:  DONALD BYRD – trumpet; LOU DONALDSON – alto sax; HERMAN FOSTER – piano; “PECK” MORRISON – bass; and ART TAYLOR – drums.

Side 1 contains following songs:  “Caravan,” “Old Folks,” and “That Good Old Feeling.”

Side Two contains following tunes: “Move It,” “There is No Greater Love,” and “L. D. Blues.”

Jacket is nice VG+, would grade excellent except for some minor wear along top seam, wear spots at corners, and some browning and light spotting on reverse (see scan), no serious problems, overall a very fine jacket.  Front artwork is nice and pristine.

Vinyl is overall very clean, the record appears to have been played a small number of times and handled with reasonably good care.  It is not flawless, as there are a couple light surface hairlines, one of which produces some light surface noise during the quieter portions of “Old Folks.”  The fidelity is very crisp and clean on all the tracks, and most of Side 1 and all of Side 2 play fine.  I think most collectors will be pleased with this record, as I found it to be very enjoyable listening.   As with all my albums, it is offered with a full satisfaction guarantee and refund privilege if not satisfied.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

In an effort to fully and accurately describe the condition of the album, I noticed an error in the description that I want to try to rectify.   After looking at the album and listening to it again, I think this is a fuller and accurate description of its condition.

While the condition is very nice overall, I should note that BOTH sides have a similar scratch perpendicular to the grooves.  In both cases, it starts near the end of track one, and runs to about the beginning bars of track 3.  On Side I, it is a very light scratch, almost inaudible, but it does produce a very slight amount of soft crackle that is audible below the music on track 2, the ballad 'old folks.'  it quiets before the end of track 2.  Tracks 1 and 3 on side 1 are great.  I think track 2 would be acceptable to most listeners, but I realize everyone has different standards and could possibly disagree.

On Side 2, the scratch is a bit more than just 'surface'.  It produces several audible soft tics near the end of track one (Move It), but overall the tune is fine and I don't think the tics are sufficient to distract, as they are way below the music and only a couple in number.  However there are numerous audible soft tics during track 2, the ballad 'there is no greater love.'  The tics diminish and become quiet before the end of track 2, so Track 3 (LD Blues) is fine.  Again, everyone has different standards, but I want to be as accurate as possible and was partially relying on memory when I gave the previous answer, so I hope this helps.  Again, the disc is fully guaranteed if for any reason the winner is not satisfied.
