Lorde went through a more wholesome phase with the release of her previous album Solar Power. She was earthly and inspired after a holiday to Antarctica. The New Zealand pop star has since distanced herself from it claiming the Lorde we saw there was more of a character and not her, implying that the Lorde we have on Virgin is her being brazenly herself and in an interview she credited Charli XCX's Brat with setting the new direction. The good news is the reset is working really well and suits her. If you're a fan of Lorde's second album, Melodrama, then you're in for a treat here: the Auckland-raised star's comeback single 'What Was That' is her best in years. And 'Man Of The Year' takes longer to get going but the pay off is huge. There's nothing here to suggest that Virgin is going to be a wobble - Lorde is untouchable.
