Whereas Little Milton's last album, 'Sings Big Blues', was firmly steeped in the smooth soul and uptown blues stylings that made him get a #1 R&B smash in 1965 with "We're Gonna Make It", the guitarist would develop a rawer, funkier sound as the '60s progressed.
This fusion of blues and funky soul exploded on the 1969 disc 'Grits Ain't Groceries', where a double whammy of horn packed groove sessions start things off, making the change in direction in-your-face apparent.
The title-track, a sumptious slice of gutbucket funk and blues from the pen of Titus Turner, gave Milton a Top 15 R&B charter and would remain one of his calling card songs throughout his career. The blasting opener, "Just a Little Bit", fared just as well, and is an equally successful mixture of dirty, down and out Chi-town blues wailing and James Brown beats.
"I Can't Quit You Baby", the album's longest track, also is the most traditionally blues-based, although the mix is deliciously raw and Milton's fretboard work-out never gets old. He's in a more Southern-styled ballad bag with the mid-tempo "I'll Always Love You", with its persistent Hammond undertones and lazily wailing horns. Side A nevertheless ends on a decidedly funky note with the splendid stomper "Twenty Three Hours"
And why stop there? Kicking off the flip comes the hardest and jammiest of tunes here, the infectious "Spring", with its ominous bass lines and Milton's booming vocal attack.
The rendition of Jimmy Hughes' "Steal Away" is nice, if somewhat redundant, but there's more potential in the smokey blues romp "You're the One".
"So Blue Without You" has Windy City all over it: a jittery, bouncing strutter propelled by popping bass lines, tons of brass and those sweet Chi-town backing vox.
Ending this fine LP is Little Milton paying hommage to fellow blues/soul pioneer Freddie King, yanking out a wonderful cover of "Did You Ever Love a Woman".
A must-have for soul fans and those who like their blues on the funky side.
Milton would perfect this approach of cross-breeding blues with soul and funk on the smashing follow-up 'If Walls Could Talk

· CONDITION:
· THE RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· THE COVER
THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has a small cutout hole punched IN THE LABEL AREA. This affects the record, which also has a small cutout hole in the label area.
- Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease) in one of the corners.
- Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine (nothing significant)
- Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)
- Cover has a visible wrinkle (air bubble in paper slick) on the back panel
NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER
