RARE 1968 ORIGINAL WHITE LABEL PROMO PRESSING!

"LISTENING- s/t"

1968 Vanguard VSD-6504 label

The condition of the cover is about VG with moderate wear and discreet clear tape on the top seam.  The condition of the disc is a nice VG+ to EX and it plays nicely!

Listening have to be the most under appreciated group in the whole scene. Instrumentaly with weavy, gushing Hammond organ and acid guitar plus vocally, they were tops. Michael Tschudin who seemed to be the leading force was an accomplished keyboard player and an inventive organist utilizing his Hammond B-2 with much skill.   Bassist Walter Powers started with "The Lost" and ended up in many Boston groups up to the punk era. Guitarist Peter Malick, unbelieveably only 16 at the time of this recording, was much too good to be in his teens. The album shows him highlighted all ovcer the place. You can hear those blues riffs he would build on in his career playing with some blues legands (Otis Span, John Lee Hooker).   Song structures in their 1968 LP are complicated. No three chord songs for these guys. They sound like they could be Berkeley grads. Lots of blues influences and complex riffing. They also had a latin rhythm thing going at times and actually get into Santana style grooves once or twice. They also get into some spacey grooves. Always tasty and controlled even in their ‘stoned’ jams that includes ‘phasing’ on some cuts. Local legend Willie ‘Loco’ Alexander from the Lost gets on a cut. The album cover is another reminder of the Bosstown Sound days. It is a picture of them playing at the Esplanade’s Hatch Shell in Boston during a Bosstown Sound rock concert. One track from the album, Stoned Is has also resurfaced on Marijuana Unknowns Compilation.
