Label/Format: Vertigo – original Spiral format (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and highly attractive with only very light, few and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Both labels will be hard to find much better on this title and this should point to a little played record, which may be the case, but this record does have numerous marks and some DO sound. More on this further down.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. About average for the later Swirl albums.

Rarity: Rare: make no mistake and that is reason I am actually offering this record. Although this moved significantly higher in the price guides, this is still way undervalued for it’s genuine rarity. This sold in minimal numbers and one, like so many others on this ultra collectable label, that would have ended up in bargain bins in the early 1970s. Many of the more obscure titles could be hardly given away when issued, many adorned with huge SALE stickers or sent back for recycling. Hence this and similar titles are so hard to find. This this actual record on offer is visually Very Good – side one a little below and side two better than. The music plays well but does have sporadic, mainly light clicks in places, mostly on side one. If this was a more ‘common’ record, I would not offer it, but wait for a better one. But this is far from ‘common’, I consider it pretty rare, it’s only the second one I have ever seen. I am very fussy on sound and only usually offer albums that play near to perfect with any blemishes minor. This being honest is a below what I would normally offer simply because of the clicks. That said, this was play-graded on hugely sensitive equipment including the world class Linn LP12 (full equipment list further down), and even via this critically revealing system, the clicks were only light, most more ticks than substantial clicks. The labels appears to show few plays, but the owner must have been less than careful as there are several, mostly fine marks, but some DO sound. The cover is very respectable condtiion however and of course, it includes more wonderful artwork from Roger Dean – this being one of his more obscure cover designs. So yes, a rare album and still undervalued, but not a perfect one this time. Many collectors will be happy with it I am sure, but not one for the more discerning collectors or serious Vertigo connoisseur. If you have any doubts, do not bid. Brief Info: Not progressive as such, but the label is well-known for offering very varied and obscure acts and most collectors search for Vertigos in that category. Lighthouse are a Canadian big band combo that made two albums very quickly – both in 1971 – on the Vertigo Spiral label. Both are elusive and sold poorly. A label famed for obscure and varied artists and bands, Lighthouse played music similar to early Chicago and quite how they got on to Vertigo I don’t know. They went on to make many albums, this being one of the better ones I have heard and it does include a superb cover design by Roger Dean. This is not a perfect copy by any means, but as stated above, sufficiently rare enough to offer - sound is clean and focused but does have intermittent clicks mostly on side one. These are not heavy, but are audible especially with more sensitive equipment. Light years better than a ‘filler’ copy, I always aim to set my standards high and this is not quite up to the standard I would normally offer, so if any collector has doubts, do not bid. I seldom offer any record less than strong Excellent, this being more Very Good, most plays better, but it’s still a more than respectable grading. So one for the slightly less discerning Spiral collector - musically it’s pretty average being honest, but I could say the same for many acts on this massively collectable label. Guess that’s why so many failed to sell, that and lack of promotion - certainly some great albums did slip the net, but Lighthouse (for me anyway) were not one of them. Certainly not seen or offered too often, so a scarce chance to own one of more less seen and somewhat obscure, later albums on this famous label, before they changed into a Spaceship.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: High: like most Swirl covers, this was not laminated, hence vulnerable to all forms of wear.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or very close to. An unlaminated gatefold format that was printed and made in England.

Cover Front: Lovely artwork and one of Roger Dean’s more obscure album cover graphics. The only blemishes of note on this front are a couple of small press marks. Overall, clean with any rubbing very faint and minor and the same for creasing with just four fine hairlines on the spine edge. The two press marks are clearly a blemish, but with little else to fault, this front still sets a high standard.

Cover Back: The back is even better, small press marks just above the lighthouse top show less on this side, and minus this, it again has little else to fault. Still very clean, fresh and attractive, the lack of ringwear is very good news indeed.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Again, little to fault inside, any marks or rub traces tiny and very few.

Top Edges: Both little short of as made, being very straight and any wear traces tiny and faint.

Bottom Edges: Very light patchy rubbing only, again, both very straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with minimal traces of any wear and both guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: The spine is superb condition, little short of as made. Solid, straight, uncompressed and square, both right edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn which can never be taken for granted on these Swirl covers.

Corners: Small and mostly light tip rubs but very little on spine at all. All retain very fine shape to near excellent shape.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this elusive, Roger Dean designed cover, one that will prove quite difficult to even find let alone a great deal better. The small press marks on the front are the only real issue, but they truly are only small, so I feel all but the most fussy collector could live with them. This still very attractive item should please many collectors but not quite for the highly discerning.

The Inner Sleeve: GOOD++: no real damage but aged with moderate+ discolour with some staining on the bottom right corner area. Some creasing on the lower corners also. The lining is still very neat and firmely attached insideand the window is very clear indeed and both circles are very neat, almost as made. All edges secure and much of the browning is glue darkening on the seams which few avoid. Maybe my grading of this inner is somewhat harsh?

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: VERY GOOD: with side one a little below and side two a little above. A more than respectable visual copy that is clean with fine shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy I feel sure has not been played that many times, but evidence suggests a little carelessly. There are marks on both sides with most on side one with a little dulling. Three or four can be seen but are far from deep and not large but do emit some light clicks as mentioned above. Therea are numerous light surface marks also but these have no audio impact. Visually a respectable record that should please many collectors but clearly not the more discerning this time.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: I have always said, I only offer the rarer and less seen records in lower conditions only if they merit it. And I feel this does, it’s not a bad copy by any means as the sound is generally clean, sharp and focused with NO distortion or groove wear. The only real issue are some sporadic clicks of which most all are light and somewhat masked by the music. Most of side two plays without many at all with most present on side one. As they are light I can personally accept them, rather that than groovewear or distortion that I find impossible to accept or tolerate. This elusive Swirl plays up to it’s high visual grading and a high percentage above with just the intermittent clicks the only real factor. Any surface sound in the form of crackle was largely absent, the pressing of the record is very fine. Way better than a gap-filler for sure and most consider a few clicks an acceptable part of old vinyl anyway. With that in mind I can cautiously recommend this scarce Spiral, but not for sound purist this time. Any doubts, do not bid.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
